There’s an outcome the Tennessee Vols should be rooting for this weekend that has nothing to do with the College Football Playoff.
The Vols haven’t officially been eliminated from the College Football Playoff just yet, but the program needs a lot of help to sneak into the 12-team bracket.
Tennessee needs several teams ahead of them to lose multiple games to have a chance to climb into the top 12, and the Vols also need to win out.
UT is set to finish the season with matchups against New Mexico State, Florida, and Vanderbilt.
The game against Florida, which is in Gainesville, could be particularly challenging as Tennessee hasn’t won in the Swamp since 2003.
Tennessee needs to root for Ole Miss to destroy Florida so the Vols’ game against the Gators won’t be at night
We learned on Monday that Tennessee’s game against Florida on Nov. 22 will kick off at either 3:30 p.m. ET, 7:00 p.m. ET, or 7:30 p.m. ET.
Playing in the Swamp at night would obviously make this game more difficult for the Vols.
That’s why VolQuest’s Austin Price suggested on Tuesday during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will that Tennessee should hope Ole Miss destroys Florida this weekend.
“If I’m Tennessee, I’m hoping Ole Miss walks the dog with the Gators — much like Kentucky did,” said Price. “I think if that happens, you’re looking at the 3:30 game. And I think the 3:30 game is a way better time slot than 7:00 or 7:30. And again, Florida is going to give you their best when [the Vols] go down there in 10 days or so.”
An Ole Miss loss wouldn’t be a bad thing for Tennessee, as that would give the Rebels two losses (with the potential for a third loss when the Rebels play against Mississippi State later this season). I don’t know if a three-loss Tennessee would jump a three-loss Ole Miss, but there would certainly be an argument for the Vols.
Playing against Florida at 3:30 instead of 7:00 or 7:30, however, would likely be better for Tennessee than for Ole Miss, which would suffer its second loss.
