5 winners and 3 losers from Ravens’ gutsy victory in Atlanta: Tyler Huntley and Derrick Henry steal one on the road
The Baltimore Ravens went into Atlanta without Lamar Jackson and somehow left atop the AFC North. A handful of players carried them there, while a few others handed Baltimore plenty to clean up this week.
Somehow, someway, the Baltimore Ravens beat the Atlanta Falcons. Without Lamar Jackson and on the road, the Ravens struggled for most of the game. Then they dragged Atlanta into overtime and came out on the other side as winners, sitting atop the AFC North.
Baltimore got the win, but it wasn’t a clean one. Here are the Ravens’ winners and losers from their overtime victory over the Falcons.
Ravens Winners vs. Falcons
K Tyler Loop
Kicker Tyler Loop kept Baltimore in this game in the first half and into the third quarter with three field goals. While the offense sputtered, Loop made sure the Ravens never fell out of reach. He has been a tremendous player, not only this season, but ever since he took over for Justin Tucker.
RB Derrick Henry
Mike Tomlin likes to call Derrick Henry the big runner during his pregame work on NBC’s Football Night in America, and Henry lived up to the nickname again. He finished with 120 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown.
Henry is aging like fine wine. Not only does he seem to get better year after year, but he gets better as the game goes along. He wore down that Falcons defense until it looked like it wanted to quit.
WR Tez Walker
Other Ravens receivers finished with more receptions and more yards. Still, wide receiver Devontez “Tez” Walker came through when it mattered most. His touchdown set up the 2-point conversion that tied the game.
Quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley dropped in a great back-shoulder throw, and the young receiver finished it with a tremendous catch. That is a big play in a high-leverage situation.
QB Tyler Huntley
If you look at the stat sheet, you’ll say Huntley had a solid game. In reality, he struggled for two, maybe three quarters. But when things got tough, he clutched up.
Huntley showed out in the fourth quarter and overtime with two huge drives. He looked on time and in rhythm, and he didn’t flinch. He was poised, he made great decisions, and he got the ball to his playmakers. That is exactly what Baltimore would ask from a quarterback filling in for Jackson.
Tyler Huntley stats vs. Falcons
- 24/32 passing
- 201 passing yards
- 2 passing TDs
S Kyle Hamilton
When Kyle Hamilton went down with an injury, everyone on the Ravens’ sideline had reason to worry. He returned to the game, and he did more than just return.
Hamilton picked off a pass from Tua that floated like a tuna fish sandwich. It doesn’t matter how ugly the throw was, because his interception sealed the game and sent the Ravens home atop the AFC North.
Ravens Losers vs. Falcons
TE Mark Andrews
Baltimore won, but some things need to be cleaned up, starting with Mark Andrews. If the Ravens had lost this game, Andrews would have had a long week in Baltimore.
He lost a fumble and dropped a couple of passes, including a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. It was by far one of his worst games as a Raven. I trust him to clean it up, but we will see how he responds.
Secondary
Drake London had a field day against the Baltimore secondary, finishing with seven receptions for more than 115 receiving yards. Dotson piled on for the Falcons as well.
Before he got injured, Michael Penix Jr. was playing pitch and catch out there. If that’s what the Falcons can do to this secondary, I can only imagine what some of the better passing attacks in the NFL will do.
3rd down defense
A lot of the trouble in the secondary connects to the third and final loser, the third-down defense. For most of the game, the Ravens couldn’t get off the field to save their lives.
They made Penix look like the second coming of Drew Brees, distributing the ball at will.
The secondary and the third-down defense need work, and Andrews has to be better. All in all, though, Baltimore went into Atlanta without its MVP quarterback and came home with a huge win and sole possession of first place in the AFC North.
