Myles Garrett has helped create the major smoke around the Cleveland Browns potentially trading the superstar pass rusher

It’s June 1 and Myles Garrett trade rumors are picking up steam for a clear reason. Cleveland Browns’ star player has stoked the fire of all of this.

June 1 is a day circled on the NFL calendar where trades and roster cuts traditionally pick up. For the Cleveland Browns, the first day of June was always going to raise the noise around Myles Garrett.

The Browns and Garrett back in March agreed to defer $29 million in bonus money until right before the season begins. There was no real benefit to making this move outside of or leaving the door open to trade Garrett.

With it now being June 1, the Browns can split the $41 million in dead money on Garrett’s contract over the next two seasons. Making a move before June 1 would force the Browns to eat all $41 million this season, which was never going to happen.

Myles Garrett’s actions have only made trade noise later with the Browns

The Browns have had Todd Monken as the head coach since Jan. 28, and he’s yet to meet Cleveland’s best player with it now being June 1. It isn’t out of the norm for players to stay away during the offseason, but it is a bit odd for a star player not to meet the new coach of his team, unless he doesn’t plan on playing for him. It being June and Garrett having not made it to Cleveland to meet Monken and the new staff is a bad look on him, and there’s no other way to put it.

Garrett has yet to be around for any team activities this offseason and has forfeited over a million dollars in workout money. All eyes are on the mandatory minicamp in just over a week and whether Garrett will be in attendance.

Cleveland’s star defender is coming off a 23-sack season and is a year out from the trade request that ended in him getting $40 million a year from the Browns on a three-year extension. The Browns went 5-12 last season and Garrett has been very open about wanting to play for a winning team.

June 1 is here and we’re on Myles Garrett trade watch until we’re not

Garrett has a chance to be at mandatory minicamp June 9-11, and it would quiet some of the trade rumors around his name. If Garrett isn’t in attendance, those rumors are only going to pick up steam. The Browns will be hit with a bunch of questions regarding Garrett if he is not there.

Cleveland now has the ability to take on just $15.53 million of dead cap in 2026 by trading Garrett, and the remaining $25.56 million would be on the team for 2027. The Browns moving their star player would have to start with two first-round picks and change. Anything less would be a non-talking point.

The Browns aren’t going to be competing in 2026 and won’t be until they have the quarterback position figured out. Garrett and the Browns are on two different timelines, he wants to win and compete for a Super Bowl, and the Browns aren’t there yet.

Garrett’s actions this offseason have only added more noise to the fire of trade rumors. He could have quieted things by showing up to meet his new coach, but he chose not to. This is a major topic of discussion for the Browns until it plays out.
