Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported on Thursday that Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton plans to call plays this weekend.

Offensive coordinator Davis Webb called plays the first four weeks of the season after Payton gave up play-calling duties this past offseason.

It turns out, though, that Webb isn’t completely losing the call sheet.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold, Payton isn’t completely taking over play-calling duties. Legwold noted on Thursday that Payton is just “going to be talking more on the headset.”

He went on to note that Payton doesn’t think Denver runs the ball enough.

It seems clear that Payton still believes strongly in Webb, but he also understands that Webb isn’t the best version of himself (as a play-caller) yet. And Denver, unfortunately, doesn’t have time to let him develop via trial and error.

Getting Payton on the headset to override decisions, or to simply show Webb what needs to be done in a particular situation, is a solution that helps the Broncos win now while also helping Webb further develop as a play-caller.

I guess we’ll see on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers if it’s a solution that works.

Update:

It turns out that Payton is going to call plays on Sunday against the Chargers.
