We all knew it was just a matter of time.

Just a few days after saying it was too early to talk about taking back play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has reportedly decided that he will call plays this weekend against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Former Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley tweeted on Wednesday night that he was hearing that Payton is planning to call plays against the Chargers.

“I’m hearing that Sean Payton is going to be taking over play calling this week,” tweeted Stokley. “Should be an interesting week.”

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio confirmed on Thursday that Payton plans to call plays this weekend.

This is undoubtedly the right move for the Broncos.

Webb still has a bright future in the NFL, and he could end up becoming one of the best play-callers in the NFL. But the Broncos don’t have time for him to learn on the job right now. Payton is one of the best to ever do it, and with Denver’s offense sputtering at the moment, it’s clear that he needs to be back in the driver’s seat.
