The Detroit Lions technically got two big wins on Sunday. They beat the Bears on the road by a score of 34-17. That was big coming off the loss to the Bills the previous week. They also got some huge help in the NFC race went the Commanders scored a last-second go-ahead touchdown to beat the Eagles.
A moment that caused the Lions' locker room to yell so loud you could hear in the press room.
As fate would have it, the Lions may have played a small role in that game to some degree. At least one of their former guys that was here last season did. Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, former Lons' quarterback David Blough drew up the Commanders' final play.
"The next call Kingsbury sent in was one that assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough added to the playbook at the end of the spring, specifically for end-of-game situations. And the Commanders have repped it in practice a ton since training camp, just for a situation like this."
Blough being a coach has made sense for a long time now. While he was on the Lions practice squad last season, he was essentially another coach. Hendon Hooker actually called him a player/coach at one point last year. Blough quietly retired after the 2023 season and took his first coaching job with the Commanders this year as their assistant quarterbacks coach.
Don't be surprised if you see Blough's name a lot more in the coming years. He could be an offensive coordinator someday and then a head coach too. He was built for this.
