Kansas City Chiefs to debut new documentary ‘The Lost Game’ chronicling the bizarre story of Lamar Hunt’s NFL basketball team
What happens when NFL stars are tasked with promoting their team during the offseason? They play basketball, of course! ‘The Lost Game’ chronicles the untold story of Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt’s NFL basketball team.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a new 30-minute original documentary from 65 Toss Power Trap Productions set to premiere on Wednesday, July 8, at 7:00 p.m. CT.
Fans are plenty familiar with ‘The Franchise’ documentary series, but ‘The Lost Game’ tells a bizarre and little-known story of a Chiefs basketball team. Lamar Hunt founded the team during the club’s early years as the Dallas Texans. It didn’t just feature obscure players; it included all the team’s stars.
At its root, this initiative was meant to promote the football team during the offseason. However, it evolved into something more: A way to raise money for local charities and connect communities together.
“The release of The Lost Game marks an important milestone for the Chiefs internal production team. This long-form documentary represents a departure from the football-centric content we’ve traditionally produced, exploring the history, passion, and innovation that defined Lamar Hunt,” said Rob Alberino Jr., Vice President of Content and Production. “Two years ago, Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt walked into my office with a Dallas Texans basketball uniform and a simple question: is there a story here? Our team jumped at the opportunity. From there, the Special Projects division of 65 Toss Power Trap Productions brought it to life. The result is a film that takes Chiefs Kingdom into a parallel sports world – one that educates, surprises, and entertains at every turn.”
The documentary chronicles how what started as a promotional initiative became a lasting piece of sports and civic history.

Should the Chiefs bring back offseason charity basketball games?
Chiefs equipment manager Allen Wright opened up the trailer with a true statement:
“Every NFL player thinks he could’ve played in the NBA,” he said. “I’m just telling you.”
He’s not wrong. In fact, basketball remains an important part of team culture in Kansas City. There’s the infamous basketball hoop, fixed about the entrance to the team showers in the practice facility locker room. It has been a staple for building team chemistry during downtime in the building.
Could the Chiefs consider bringing back a charity basketball game after the debut of this untold story? Now, the big concern is injuries. And it was a concern back in the day, too. It made headlines in Kansas City when Royals legend George Brett broke his thumb playing in one of these charity basketball games. They got pretty competitive, especially when they competed against other athletes.
You might also recall the time Patrick Mahomes was recorded playing a pickup basketball game at an Overland Park recreational center. He is still contractually barred from some non-football sports activities as far as I’m aware. So, they might need to grant No. 15 a waiver to participate if they were to bring back offseason basketball.
The lost game premieres tonight exclusively on the Chiefs’ Official YouTube Channel.
