The Kansas City Chiefs have signed tight end Anthony Firkser to a reserve/future contract, per NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
The Chiefs added Firkser to their practice squad back in early November. He was activated to the 53-man roster for three games during the 2024 season, playing a total of 24 snaps on offense and 27 on special teams. His only statistic recorded was one tackle.
Firkser spent about half of his rookie season with Kansas City in 2017 after going undrafted. He then signed with the Titans in 2018, and spent the next four seasons in Tennessee. He appeared in 58 games during that span, catching 106 passes for 1,107 yards and five touchdowns.
In 2022 Firkser signed with the Atlanta Falcons, and since then has spent time with the New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, and New York Jets. He is the 12th player that the Chiefs have signed to a reserve/future deal since Wednesday, with the previous 11 all having spent time on their practice squad last season.
All 2024 practice squad contracts officially expire next week. The 12 who K.C. have re-signed will not reach free agency and cannot be signed away by other teams. Here are the Chiefs' remaining practice squad players who are set to become free agents if not re-signed:
- LB Swayze Bozeman
- LB Cole Christiansen
- TE Anthony Firkser
- RB Keaontay Ingram
- CB Nic Jones
- CB Steven Nelson
- WR Montrell Washington
As for Firkser, he is now the sixth TE of the Chiefs' roster along with Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Peyton Hendershot, Jared Wiley and Baylor Cupp. Jody Fortson is also still on K.C.'s roster, but is currently set to hit free agency in about a month. It's possible that the Chiefs are stockpiling on the position due to Kelce's looming retirement decision.
