One of the biggest surprises for the Miami Dolphins thus far through their 2026 training camp has been rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas.
Douglas became one of the most polarizing selections in the top-100 of the 2026 NFL Draft this past April. Many pundits tabbed the former Texas Tech product as a late-round target — but Miami’s general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan saw him quite differently. Miami drafted Douglas 75th overall. And his training camp performance has suggested that Sullivan may have been on to something. He’s been Miami’s most consistent weapon. But will that production hold up when we start playing for keeps? One prominent NFL.com analyst, Lance Zierlein, has called his shot.

Best-case scenario: With the rebuilding Dolphins lacking a proven WR1, Douglas finds his footing quickly as both an intermediate and deep threat for Malik Willis. He makes 50 catches for close to 700 yards.
Worst-case scenario: Douglas struggles to beat press corners and win contested catches at a high enough rate. Chris Bell recovers from his ACL tear to become the more heavily targeted rookie receiver in Miami’s offense.
Projected stats: 41 catches for 538 yards, 2 TDs.

Zierlein’s objective was to outline the best and worst case scenario for 17 offensive rookies. His range of outcomes for Douglas sits between 50 catches for nearly 700 yards and falling behind Chris Bell as the top option in the offense. The formal projection? 41 catches for 538 yards and two touchdowns.
The yards per catch average (13.1) feels like it’s on the right track. Douglas was a field-stretcher at Texas Tech and I believe his role in Miami’s offense will call for the same. Furthermore, I suspect the Dolphins will be an aggressive vertical passing offense with their play action passing thanks to Malik Willis’ big arm and mobility. That all should add up to a big number per catch for Douglas. I would take the over on 41 receptions as the season nears. I’m not sure I would have two months ago, but Douglas has been pretty undeniable throughout training camp.
These numbers would be a nice launch point for a third round rookie. But as of right now, I’m going to be leaning towards the over on all three statistics. Give me an outcome that leans closer to Zierlein’s best case scenario. Maybe that just makes me an optimist. But I do believe that’s where Douglas is headed.
