NFL insider doubles down on a surprising stance regarding the Dolphins’ ongoing Tua Tagovailoa situation
“I think they can trade him.”
The NFL’s Super Bowl media tour is a non-stop machine. This time last year, it was a Tyreek Hill apology tour for the Miami Dolphins. This time around? It’s the Tua Tagoavailoa speculation parade.
Almost all the insiders agree one one thing: Tua Tagovailoa has probably played his last snap as a member of the Miami Dolphins. The quarterback himself said a fresh start elsewhere would be “dope” at the end of the year. The Dolphins benched him in December. And it’s surely been a topic of conversation for new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley. But what that exit looks like is as good a guess as anyone’s right now. One insider, Ian Rapoport, seems to think a trade is on the table — and he doubled down on the idea while catching up with long-time sports personality Jim Rome at the Super Bowl.
Ian Rapoport doubles down on the idea that the Miami Dolphins could trade Tua Tagovailoa this offseason
“I’d be surprised if Tua was in Miami. You know, I think they can trade him but they’re going to have to eat a lot of the contract to do it, which is okay they’re paying it anyway so you might as well eat $30 million — what’s the difference? I think they can trade him.”
— NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport to Jim Rome on the latest outlook for Tua Tagovailoa in Miami
This isn’t the first time that Rapoport has indicated that Miami could swing some kind of contract dump trade with Tagovailoa’s contract. Given the lofty compensation facing Tagovailoa in 2026, it feels like an ambitious long-shot path for many Dolphins fans. But Rapoport is as well plugged in as just about anyone, which makes him continuing to suggest this is a viable option interesting. Maybe not likely. But, at the very least, interesting. And certainly something to watch with the start of the league’s calendar year just about one month away.
