Sam Darnold hits Vikings fans where it hurts the most by invoking famous Kevin Garnett quote after Super Bowl LX victory

It’s bad enough that the Minnesota Vikings haven’t won a Super Bowl, and Sam Darnold’s postgame quote made it hurt that much more.

The Minnesota Vikings haven’t made the Super Bowl in 49 seasons and have yet to win one, but they had many reasons to watch on Sunday. The biggest reason was that their starting quarterback in 2024, Sam Darnold, was with the Seattle Seahawks.

The game played out as many believed it would. The Seahawks’ stout defense suffocated the New England Patriots’ offensive line for six sacks and two interceptions, including a pick-six by Uchenna Nwosu in the fourth quarter, helping them win 29-13.

Sam Darnold uses Kevin Garnett quote after Super Bowl win

This was not a banner game from Darnold, but he was more than fine. He completed 19-of-38 passes for 202 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to A.J. Barner. The one thing with Darnold’s game on Sunday night was simple: he played efficient football. The game plan was built around Kenneth Walker III’s rushing success, and it was the right call, as he won MVP.

After the game, Darnold was one of the first players interviewed, and he gave an honest answer.

It feels like a simple phrase, but it’s far from it. If you’ve been a Minnesota sports fan for a long time, you know exactly where that line comes from: former Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Garnett.

It resonates with Darnold because he had to leave the state to win his first world championship, just as Garnett did, but he was only in town for a year, whereas Garnett was here for 10 years and won an MVP award.

In his first year with the Boston Celtics, Garnett led the franchise to the NBA Championship, which was the first of his career. He was incredibly emotional with sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, crying during the interview and shouting out, “Anything is possible.”

Darnold saying that after winning the Super Bowl is true with his journey, but it sticks a metaphorical knife in the backs of Vikings fans. It’s bad enough watching him win the Super Bowl one year after he quarterbacked the Vikings, but using that quote after being so intentional with his words about the franchise stings that much more.

It’s hard not to be happy for Darnold, but this makes it sting a little bit more.
