Vikings Defensive Horizontal NFL Draft Board: Top 119 players ranked, what it means, and why it’s important
Most people focus on a big board when it comes to the NFL Draft. The better way to look at the Minnesota Vikings’ potential draft picks as a whole is a horizontal board.
The NFL Draft is almost here, and how the Minnesota Vikings will approach it will be worth watching.
After a free agency period where they only added two quality players in quarterback Kyler Murray and cornerback James Pierre. The lack of additions in free agency make the NFL Draft so interesting for the Vikings.
Historically, big boards have been the industry standard with how we project players to be selected, but horizontal boards should be the standard.
Minnesota Vikings defensive horizontal board
The idea of the horizontal board is simple: quantify how good the players are by matching them up with the needs of the team. Instead of ranking players 1-100, you put them on the board based on where you would take them in the draft.
It helps fans, analysts, and teams quantify whether a player is going to be worth a selection at a certain spot in the draft. That gets decided by mutiple factors, including:
- Talent
- Injury history
- Roster needs
Defensively, the Vikings could realistically take any position at 18th overall, as they all have major question marks moving forward. Here is the horizontal board for the defense.

Some highlights on the horizontal board.
- Four of the top five players in the class are very likely to be out of range for the Vikings. The one interesting player is Downs, who can slide due to playing safety.
- There are five players worth sticking and picking at 18th overall across four different positions. It’s an interesting group of players that all have serious questions.
- The deepest position groups are at cornerback, safety, and edge rusher. Linebacker isn’t nearly as deep as the discussion would lead you to believe.
- A lot of intriguing players between picks 97 and 163. Getting a fourth-round pick would help the Vikings get another talented player on a roster that needs depth.
Will the Vikings follow my horizontal board? Only time will tell, but now you have a good sense of where everyone defensively should be selected.
