Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell reveals the process behind selecting Kyler Murray as starting quarterback
For the Minnesota Vikings, selecting Kyler Murray as the starting quarterback came relatively quickly.
The Minnesota Vikings have officially named Kyler Murray the starting quarterback for the 2026 season. It was to be expected for a multitude of reasons, but happening so quickly is really interesting.
With the decision being made, now come the questions on why they chose Murray over J.J. McCarthy. Head coach Kevin O’Connell answered those on Tuesday afternoon in a press conference with the media.

When O’Connell named Murray the starter, he highlighted that this was always the timeline he and general manager Nolan Teasley envisioned.
“It’s been a true competition and we feel like we’re at a place where we’ve made a complete evaluation,” said O’Connell. “I always had, and we had this timeline as Nolan [Teasley], and I worked through the summer talking about what we wanted this to look like right around now, feeling like between nine practices and another day of a little bit lower volume physical work, but same type of thing above the neck mental. We would have a good idea of kind of where guys were at and would want to provide clarity not only for the players involved, but most importantly for our team.”
It makes sense for O’Connell to only want this to last a couple of weeks, as Murray will now have 33 days to work as the starting quarterback going into the 2026 season. The other aspect of the small sample size of the competition is the organization already has a lot of data on these players, making it more difficult to change narratives. However true that may be, giving both Murray and McCarthy relatively equal reps to show what they are. If McCarthy had a great camp where he showed a lot of improvement, we would be having a different conversation right now.

Now comes why O’Connell ended up picking Murray. We know the explosiveness that Murray provides, but the projection of what he could be stood out.
“What jumped out is what could be. And at some point in this thing, knowing the timeline we had and knowing that we needed to do some sort of a projection based upon a lot of those things,” said O’Connell.
When watching practices, Murray would continue attacking vertically down the field, and those explosive plays were what propelled the 2024 squad led by Sam Darnold to a 14-3 record. Showcasing that ability consistently is a huge aspect for what the offense can be. It’s also the best unit he’s ever worked with, including the best group of weapons and wide receivers. As O’Connell mentioned, it is a progression, especially since Darnold at the same point in training camp was struggling in a similar fashion.
The offense was starting to come to him much more easily as camp went on.
“As the installs piled up, you’d see a little bit of a slowdown. From a processing standpoint, it would then, maybe the next day, there was an immediate response. And just some of those things bode really well for his role now as we lock in on this thing and try to do the best we can to prepare him,” said O’Connell.
If that exponential growth continues, this will end up being a huge win for the Vikings.
