FOXBOROUGH, Mass – As soon as the clock hit zero at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the New England Patriots season was officially over. And now, all the focus was indeed on Bill Belichick's future.
The head coach didn't take the podium until almost an hour after the game concluded. And when he did, he made it clear that he didn't want to answer any questions regarding his future.
"Disappointing finish here," Belichick said at the beginning of his press conference. "Disappointing year for all of us – players, coaches staff, the entire organization. Not anything that ay of us are in any way content with."
Belichick and the Patriots finished the 2023 season with a 4-13 record. And with this final loss to the Jets, it seems he could have coached his final game for New England.
"I'll address questions on the game. As far as the future goes, I'll sit down with Robert as I do every year with him at some point at the end of the season and we'll talk about things like we always do," Belichick said. "I'm sure that will happen."
"That's really all I have to say about that right now."
Reporters continued to ask questions about what is expected to come in the next few days.
However, his final answer did give a bit away.
"I like coaching the team. I like preparing the team, game planning, coaching on Sunday's."
Here is everything that was asked and here is how Belichick responded:
Reporter: Coming off the field today, did you have any different feelings about the end of today?
Belichick: "Disappointed about the way the game turned out, sure. Yeah, let's leave it at that."
Reporter: Do you expect to be coaching the team here next year?
Belichick: "Disappointing the way the game finished, yeah."
Reporter: Bill, is it your preference to come back next season and coach the team?
Belichick: "Yeah, so I just finihsed the game here with the Jets. Put everything I had into it and disappointed in the results."
Reporter: It's our understanding that you're under contract through next year. Is it your hope to come back.
Belichick: Just finished the game with the Jets. Put everything I had into it this week and prepare our team the best I could to play in it."
