The Washington Commanders kicked off Day 7 of training camp with some important injury news: Cornerback Trey Amos, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, and punter Tress Way have all been cleared to return to practice.

Amos and Armstrong were on the Physically Unable to Perform list, while Way was on the Non-Football Injury list. All three players are very important to the team, but it’s the duo of Amos and Armstrong that carry the most weight. Both guys are viewed as key pieces in 2026 and beyond. They not only boost the depth – they can both start, as well.

“Some good news (on the injury) front, you’ll see some familiar faces back on the field today, working back in at some level, and that’ll be Trey Amos, Tress Way, and Dorance Armstrong,” Dan Quinn told reporters ahead of Friday’s practice.

“… It’s a long road, and man, they’ve worked really hard to get back into this space. So days like today, those kind of milestones, man, I’ve made it back onto the field, like it’s a big deal, and Trey as well. So to see those guys back here, man, like they are they are champing at the bit to get more.”

Trey Amos and Dorance Armstrong boost the cornerback room and pass rush

If Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson can get back to their 2024 form, the Commanders now have a solid four-man rotation at cornerback after this latest batch of injury news.

Granted, Amos also needs to show he’s back on track, himself. Not only that, he needs to continue his development because while he did show flashes, he was largely just OK during his rookie year.

Armstrong was the Commanders’ best pass rusher, and one of the NFL’s best pass rushers, before his injury. That’s why the news surrounding him is particularly exciting. The Commanders now have Armstrong, Odafe Oweh, and K’Laivon Chaisson leading the way at EDGGE

“I think he’s ahead for sure, so I wouldn’t say surprised, but they have really put in good work to get there,” Quinn said when asked if he was surprised that Armstrong was cleared. “So for him, specifically talking about DA, it’ll be more individual here for a little while, but that does allow him to get back with his teammates. It allows him to participate in some of the walkthroughs in the evening, so he won’t get into any of the team reps just yet.”

And of course, Way is a very solid punter and is one of the Commanders’ longest-tenured players as he enters his 13th season with the team.

It’s big news right before the Commanders host the Miami Dolphins for joint practice. I wouldn’t expect to see Amos and Armstrong on the practice field for that, but there’s definitely a possibility we see them when the Commanders hit the road to visit the Baltimore Ravens for joint practice.
