Dan Quinn sends stern warning after Commanders beat Eagles as Washington’s biggest problem threatens to linger

Washington defeated Philadelphia, but Dan Quinn wasn’t satisfied with the Commanders’ nine penalties, a recurring issue that could undermine their efforts to turn the season around.

The Washington Commanders finally got a much-needed division win Sunday night, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 after falling behind by 10 points.

But Dan Quinn wasn’t ready to overlook everything that went wrong.

Washington committed nine penalties for 70 yards, including repeated pre-snap mistakes that disrupted the offense early in the game.

Quinn emphasized the discipline issues during his postgame remarks, making it clear that a convincing victory doesn’t excuse the mistakes that could cost Washington in a closer game.

The Commanders have little room for error as they try to recover from a difficult start to the season. Quinn knows that, and his response to Sunday’s win showed exactly where his attention is turning next.

“I was frustrated with penalties, to see that pop up again we gotta get to the bottom of that. That has to go down. We’ve adding things to practice and to still see those was frustrating”

Quinn’s message after the Eagles win was the right one

It’s not totally clear who the frustration was aimed at. Quinn may believe the discipline problem falls under his own purview as the head coach. It could be directed at his coordinators, or all the way down to the players. Either way, the message landed loud.

Personally, I love this approach from Quinn. He knows games have already slipped away from the Commanders because of penalties this season. Drives with real momentum have died on the spot. Significant touchdowns have come off the board.

Winning with the same habits that already cost you games is how you lose the next one. Quinn clearly understands that, and he didn’t let a good result paper overshadow a bad trend.

The numbers behind Quinn’s frustration

Let’s take a look at what Quinn was staring at after the final whistle. Washington finished with nine total penalties. Four of them came in the first three drives. Seven were accepted in the first half alone.

That’s a sloppy start for any team in the NFL. For a team coming out of the bye week, it’s worse. The bye is supposed to be the reset button, the extra time to rest, scheme up and sharpen the details. Instead, the Commanders came out of it looking like the details never got the memo. Even in a win, that lack of focus is suboptimal.

Why penalties could sink Washington’s season

Washington is fighting for every single win to keep its season alive. In full honesty, Quinn is fighting to keep his job alive right along with it. When that’s the situation, you cannot hand away yards and points for free.

The Commanders proved Sunday night that they can recover from a bad start.

They fell behind Philadelphia 10-0, settled down and scored 27 unanswered points to earn a much-needed division victory.

But Quinn’s message after the game was just as important as the result.

Washington committed nine penalties for 70 yards, and several of those mistakes came before the offense could even get a play started. The Eagles couldn’t make the Commanders pay for all of them. That doesn’t mean another opponent won’t.

With the Los Angeles Rams coming to Washington next Sunday, the Commanders have another opportunity to build momentum.

They also have a clear assignment for the week.

Enjoy the win. Fix the penalties.
