The Washington Commanders ended up being more passive in free agency than many expected around the NFL.

One position the team ended up not addressing with a big-name signing is cornerback, even though they were linked to nearly every top player available. A new A to Z Sports 2025 NFL mock draft has the Commanders trying to right that wrong by landing a dynamic playmaker out of the ACC.

"The secondary in Washington needs another playmaker. Enter Thomas, who bursted onto the season in his final season in college. Washington's pass defense gets a lot grittier with this pick."

New A to Z Sports mock draft

Florida State CB Azareye'h Thomas has had a fantastic draft season. It began with a dominant week in Mobile, Alabama, at the 2025 Senior Bowl and followed it up by impressing teams in meetings. He would give the Commanders a high-upside player who can play in both man and zone coverage schemes. His long frame, paired with his coverage ability, projects him as a day-one starter, and in Dan Campbell's defense, he'd have the upside to become a star.

Some may think he lacks speed to line up against the best wide receivers in the league. But he was able to lock up multiple top-speed WRs at the Senior Bowl, even during one-on-one drills where CBs are set up to fail. Pair him with Marshon Lattimore on the outside, with Mike Sainstrill heading into his second season, and the Commanders could have a great CB trio in 2025. Maybe it's even good enough to make fans forget that they swung and missed on multiple top free agents CBs in the offseason. And, oh, did I mention he is one of the youngest players in the entire draft class?
