Chargers take running back in round one
22. Los Angeles Chargers: Omarion Hampton, RB, North Carolina
The Chargers desperately need to give Justin Herbert more offensive firepower. Hampton would hit a lot of home runs in this offensive system.
Hampton has some impressive contact balance, a trait that more NFL teams are valuing nowadays. He's often projected to go early in round two, but the back half of round one is certainly in play as well.
If there was no Ashton Jeanty in this class, Hampton would likely be the top running back in this class. He is a stout running back who can do a little bit of everything out of the backfield. At North Carolina, Hampton lined up nearly exclusively next to the quarterback in the shotgun and thrived in that spot.
Whether it be zone or gap concepts, Hampton can do it all for you. He can run through defenders and can soften angles to avoid defenders. However, he struggles to make defenders miss in open space and that could be viewed as limiting. — Tyler Forness
Hampton won't go before Jeanty, but that does not mean taking him in round one is a mistake. His impact on LA's offense immediately would take a lot of pressure off of Justin Herbert.
It's unknown what sort of role Gus Edwards or J.K. Dobbins has for the Chargers going forward, and Hampton provides more athleticism than either of those options.
I like this fit for Los Angeles, and the value matches when you consider Hampton's potential in the pros.
