Aaron Glenn’s coaching staff follows troubling trend that’s hurt Jets for years

The New York Jets have finalized their coaching staff for the 2025 season. And it already has a dangerous trend.
Aaron Glenn made it clear, early and often at his introductory press conference that he wasn’t looking for a coach with a specific game plan or scheme. He wanted to find the best coaches available for the New York Jets. A statement I, along with most other Jets fans, took to mean that the cycle of no-names and young guys was coming to an end. He wasn’t going to hire guys he was familiar with, or he worked with in the past. He was looking for the best coaches. And on one side of the ball, he did that.
Bringing in Steve Wilks to run the defense is a home run hire for the Jets. He not only has experience calling a defense as a coordinator, but he also has head coaching experience. For a first-time head coach like Glenn, having someone around who has seen what it takes to be the top guy is invaluable. The rest of the defensive staff is rounded out with guys who have had success at their positions and experience calling plays.
Defensive line coach Eric Washington spent last year as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator. He previously was the D.C. in Carolina before that. Defensive backs coach Chris Harris was the Tennessee Titans' defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach the last two seasons. Aaron Curry, the former first round pick, was the Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach the last two seasons and will now coach the Jets linebackers.
And if all of that isn’t enough experience, Aaron Glenn was a defensive play caller for years in Detroit. Glenn can claim he is the coach for the whole team all he wants, but the fact is that he comes from the defensive side of the ball.
What about the offense?
The offensive coaching staff is lacking in experience. I’m not talking about years in the league. I’m talking about play calling experience. The Jets new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand has never called plays in his football career. Don’t get me wrong, a lack of experience for the OC doesn’t mean that the coach is doomed to fail, but the Jets haven’t really surrounded him with a wealth of knowledge either.
Pass game coordinator Scott Turner is the only member of the offensive staff who has called plays at any level. He did so for the Las Vegas Raiders for a brief time last year and spent three seasons (2020-22) as the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator.
Outside of Turner, no other coach has been an offensive coordinator, let alone a head coach. Their offensive line coach Steve Heiden, a position I think is one of the most important on a coaching staff, has never coached an offensive line in his career. He never even played the position. He was a tight end and a tight end coach. There may be some overlap between the o-line and tight ends, but they are not the same.
Quarterbacks coach Charles London has coached all over the offensive side of the ball in his 20 years of coaching, but not once did someone give him a chance to be a coordinator. That is a red flag in my book.
The Jets have been a defense-first ball club for decades, and it appears the trend will continue with Aaron Glenn at the helm. The lack of experience on the offensive side of the ball is concerning considering the issues for the offense for the last decade. Now, with Aaron Rodgers officially gone, there will be even less experience for the Jets offense than before.
Garrett Wilson needs to address the trade rumors that were putting his future with the Jets in question
The quarterback for the 2025 New York Jets will not be Aaron Rodgers. And who the new quarterback will be throwing his passes to may be in question, as well. Several players have already voiced their displeasure over the news that Rodgers will not be returning, but one player in particular might be happy about […]
