Ryan Day is one of the top two college football coaches in America, right up there with Georgia’s Kirby Smart.
Day finally winning the big game and getting over the hump has catapulted him into elite company. The Ohio State Buckeyes head coach is now one of only three active college football coaches with a National Championship win.
One area Day hasn’t consistently excelled in is beating Michigan. If there’s one thing he needs to improve, it’s that. Being from New Hampshire, it’s possible he didn’t fully grasp the intensity of the rivalry before arriving at Ohio State.
Speaking of New Hampshire, Day has a surprising celebrity connection from his time on the East Coast—one you probably wouldn’t expect. The Ohio State head coach has a link to actor and comedian Adam Sandler.
“We’ve met before,” Day said recently. “When I was young and he was kind of coming up, and those first few movies started coming out. And then my father-in-law taught him at Central. My father-in-law was a social studies teacher and had him as a student. So, indirectly, we’re all friendly.”
That’s probably a connection you didn’t see coming. Sandler was born in New York but moved to New Hampshire when he was six years old. Both Day and Sandler lived in Manchester and Day went on to play college football at New Hampshire. Things worked out pretty well for Sandler and his career, too.
Now, if you ever see Sandler on the sideline at an Ohio State game—you’ll know why. Kidding. That probably won’t happen… but don’t count it out.
