The Oklahoma Sooners just had a player enter the transfer portal, again.
Ashton "Champ" Sanders, a three-star recruit from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, California, committed to Oklahoma in November 2022 after an official visit. His decision was pivotal for the Sooners' 2023 recruiting class, particularly bolstering a defensive line in need of new talent. Initially committed to Cal, Sanders reconsidered his options before choosing Oklahoma over other suitors like Wisconsin. At that time, this was a big get for OU.
At Cathedral, he shone with 82 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks in his senior year, leading his team to a 10-3 record and into the playoffs. His physical prowess and agility made him a coveted recruit that a lot of schools, but only Oklahoma could grab him.
Sanders joined Oklahoma early in January 2023, participating in spring practices. His freshman season saw him in three games, where he made one tackle and half a tackle for loss, typical for a freshman on a line where experience matters. At 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, he has the build for a disruptive defensive tackle, mainly playing as a nose tackle or one-technique.
Sanders entering the transfer portal is likely due to the crowded depth chart at his position, which might restrict his chances to play, and, he already doesn't play much. So, you can understand why he would want to get out of town and hope for a fresh start. He waited his turn, and it just never happened. You can't really be mad at him for that.
However, that doesn't mean this doesn't make it any easier for the Sooners and their tough start to the 2025 offseason.
