Oklahoma Sooners impact transfer defender survives brief injury scare during fall camp
One of the Oklahoma Sooners’ prized transfer portal pulls had a minor injury scare in camp this week.
The Oklahoma Sooners made a splash in the transfer portal when they pulled former five-star defensive end Marvin Jones Jr. Jones, a former Florida State Seminole, is a toolsy player who was searching for some stability and coaching to turn his career around before declaring for the NFL Draft.
Jones is part of a fierce battle at defensive end, battling another former five-star in PJ Adebawore, as well as talented youngsters Danny Okoye and Taylor Wein.
Marvin Jones has brief injury scare
However, some concerns spiked this week as fall camp opened up. Jones battled a minor back injury throughout the offseason, and word came out during camp on Friday that he might have re-aggravated that injury.
Fortunately, it seems like Jones is ok. According to sources with the team, the staff isn’t too worried about Jones’s health. He might be held out or told to take it easy for a few days, but beyond that, Jones should be an active participant with the Sooners.
It’s understandable to assume the worst-case scenario with any injuries, especially after the disaster that was the 2024 season for Oklahoma. It’s not exactly comforting that Jones already had an injury he was dealing with, but it does sound like this staff believes it’s a relatively minor injury that won’t hinder him much.
The Sooners need Jones to be healthy for the 2025 season. He might not be the outright starter at defensive end, but he’s a talented player in his own right who will make their pass rush even deadlier than it was last season. They will play it safe with him as he fully recovers.
How this impacts the battle for that defensive end spot is still to be determined. Adebawore has battled injuries of his own in the past. Maybe it paves the way for Okoye and Wein to make plays with the starting units. Regardless, Jones’s injury is relatively minor, and he shouldn’t miss much, if any, time moving forward.
