Ryan Day echos the same worry that Matt Patricia has for the Ohio State Buckeyes coming up
The Buckeyes are going to have to prepare specifically for this one.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are in the midst of an off week following a 3-0 start to the season. When the No. 1 team is back on the field, they’ll be on the road for their first Big Ten game of the season against the Washington Huskies. Washington will offer a legit road test for the Buckeyes and will be the first road start for QB Julian Sayin. Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia recently revealed he’s a bit worried about Washington QB Demond Williams Jr.
“That first-step quickness that he has and his ability to get to top speed, it’s explosive,” Patrica said earlier in the week. “It’s fast. He’s quick. He gets out of the pocket. He’s got a really strong, live arm. This thing can go downfield. They’ve got good players to get the ball to. That’s gonna be a huge challenge for us.”
Ryan Day thinks Washington’s Demond Williams can present a problem as well
“He’s lightning in a bottle. He’s like Kyler Murray,” Day said on Thursday. “He’s a very good player. He’s got a strong arm. He’s quick, he’s fast, and a really good football player. We’re gonna have to have a really good plan for him.”
Day and Patrica both compared Williams to Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, as both are potent runners with strong arms. Ohio State’s defense is giving up just 5.3 points per game, and it’s going to need to be ready to play on the road in Week 3. Not only do they have Williams to worry about on the ground, but when he’s throwing it, he has a talented future NFL wideout to throw it to in Denzel Boston.
Patrica’s defense has looked elite, and there has been no sign of missing Jim Knowles around Columbus. If the Buckeyes’ defense can deliver in its first road test of the season, it would be a huge boost to the team’s outlook as a whole. The defense was excellent against Texas at home, but on the road, things can change quickly, and the Buckeyes will have to be up for the challenge next Saturday.
