The Michigan Wolverines took care of business in their first Big Ten game of the season and it was an impressive win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the road. Michigan’s run game and defense helped them to a 30-27 win in what is a tough environment at Nebraska. Michigan had 286 yards on the ground of their 391 total yards and that included a 37-yard touchdown from freshman QB Bryce Underwood, who showed that his legs can be a real factor when the passing game isn’t going. The win over Nebraska also marks the end of Sherrone Moore’s two-game suspension for this season and he’ll be back with the team tomorrow.

“Wink Martindale… we’re gonna put him in bubble on the plane on the way back so nothing happens to him,” Michigan interim head coach Biff Poggi said after the game. “Our defensive kids played so hard, they never gave up, the whole team never gave up.”

Biff Poggi signs off as Michigan’s interim head coach during Sherrone Moore’s suspension

“I’m so happy for Sherrone Moore. Coach, 12:01 baby, I won’t be there but I left you a note on your desk and our players and our coaches were outstanding. I’m riding off into the sunset now.”

Poggi was the associate head coach under Jim Harbaugh for a couple of years with the Wolverines before he went to Charlotte to lead that program for two years. Michigan brought Poggi back to be the associate head coach again this season and he stepped in the last two games as the interim while Moore served two of the three games he was suspended for as a result of the NCAA’s investigation into the sign-stealing scandal. Moore will miss the opener next year against Western Michigan to finish out the three-game suspension. Poggi’s debut was last week in a 63-3 win over Central Michigan.

Michigan beating Nebraska on the road is a good sign of what this team can be. Justice Haynes was the main catalyst for the Wolverines with 149 rushing yards, including a clutch 75-yard score just before halftime. Michigan and Nebraska were tied at 17 at halftime despite the Wolverines jumping out to a 10-0 lead. From there, Dominic Zvada continued to be a big weapon for the Wolverines, and tough defense in the second half was enough to grab a quality win. Moore will be back for Michigan’s next game at home following their off week, and that will come against Wisconsin on Oct. 4. The Badgers were beaten by Maryland in Week 4 and give the Wolverines a chance to continue stacking wins early in Big Ten play. As far as Poggi’s time as the interim at Michigan, it couldn’t have gone better.

Former Michigan All-American’s NFL career is in a really cloudy place early in the season with the Cleveland Browns

The Michigan Wolverines had 13 players drafted after winning the National Championship in 2023, a testament to just how dominant that team was. Even in the most recent draft, key pieces from that title run were selected, including former Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham. The headliner, of course, was J.J. McCarthy, who officially became the […]
