Oklahoma Sooners coaching staff will soon have to make some very important decisions regarding several young players
The Oklahoma Sooners will have to decide which of the true freshman, and other players, they will want to redshirt here pretty soon.
We’re now four games into the season, and the Oklahoma Sooners are 4-0, the same record they had this time last season. However, this year does feel a bit better. Last season, Oklahoma went through injury hell and had to play so many true freshmen and sophomore players.
This year, they have done the same, but not because they had to, but instead, because some of them are very good. Since we’re four games in, let’s see how many games each of the freshmen has played, so we know which ones will redshirt and which ones won’t.
Sooners Freshmen, and the games they have played
- QB Jett Niu – 0/4 games
- RB Tory Blaylock – Four-Game Limit
- WR Elijah Thomas – Four-Game Limit
- WR Emmanuel Choice – 1/4
- TE Trynae Washington – 0/4
- OL Michael Fasusi – 2/4
- OL Ryan Fodje – Four-Game Limit
- OL Owen Hollenbeck – 0/4
- OL Darius Afalava – 0/4
- DL CJ Nickson – 0/4
- DL Trent Wilson – 2/4
- DL Alex Shieldnight – 0/4
- LB Marcus James – 0/4
- CB Courtland Guillory – Four-Game Limit
- CB Trystan Haynes – 0/4
- CB Maliek Hawkins – 1/4
- S Omarion Robinson – 3/4
- S Marcus Wimberly – 0/4
A few of the guys listed we are certain will not be redshirted. Courtland Guillory took on the role of the top cornerback in the last game against the Auburn Tigers, when he was matched up with Cam Coleman all game. Now, he didn’t do amazing, but he had some moments. They love what he brings, and he will undoubtedly be a starter for the entire season.
And, while we have only seen him in two games so far, the same can be said about Michael Fasusi as soon as he gets back. Ryan Fodje, the stud offensive guard, will not be redshirted. He is a player that many people on the beat believe can eventually take over as a starter this year. Hollenback, the other offensive lineman that likely won’t be redshirted, hasn’t played yet, but he’s the only backup at the center position behind Maikkula, so there’s no way they will redshirt him.
Tory Blaylock and Elijah Thomas will likely not be getting redshirted. Blaylock is the starting running back despite having a bad outing in the last game. However, he is easily the best as things stand. For Thomas, he could get redshirted, but he likely won’t. He had two special teams tackles against Auburn, and after last year’s injury issues in the wide receiver room, I doubt they will redshirt many, if any WRs, until later in the year when they are more certain.
If they haven’t played yet, there is a good chance they will end up being redshirted, but not until late in the season.
