Mike Elko throws shade at Brian Kelly and media following Texas A&M huge SEC win over Auburn Tigers
Mike Elko seems tired of the doubts people have with his Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M logged another big time win as they kicked off SEC play against Auburn this past Saturday. It wasn’t always pretty. The final score certainly doesn’t look like it was a very dominant game for the Aggies. However, Mike Elko made some really good points following the game about just how good this Aggies team has been, despite what media members, analysts, and even some fans want to complain about so far this season.
Mike Elko throws shade at Brian Kelly while he asks Aggies media to being so negative
Texas A&M has started off this season extremely welll, but there have been some obvious imperfections pointed out about this Aggies team, even prior to the slightly ugly 16-10 win over the Auburn Tigers on Saturday. First, it was media nitpicking Marcel Reed’s passing game. Then it was concerns over the defense giving up too many yards and points. Then it was how bland the defense has been so far this year. Coach Elko must have been a bit tired of all the slight negativity, because following the game he couldn’t help but throw shade at media and Brian Kelly amid his complaints of them not asking any positive questions:
“Does anyone want to ask a question about us being 4-0 for the first time since 2016? Or how did the defense bounce back? Or how about, you held them to 176 yards on offense, and you had five sacks, and they were 0-12 on third down, and 0-2 on 4th down, and you got the return game going again? I don’t mean to sound like ‘someone else’ but my gosh, will you guys stop being so dreadful and gloomy?”
For those who might still be unfamiliar, the “someone else” coach Elko is definitely Brian Kelly. Coach Kelly just called out and complained–and rather loudly, angrily–following LSU’s press conference just a week ago following a win over Florida. Coach Elko was obviously nodding to Kelly’s complaint of his media being too negative, while also pointing out that he doesn’t want to be that guy.
However, he has a point. Fans and media need to appreciate just how good this Texas A&M team has been and might become as the season progresses. A&M is undefeated having faced Auburn and Notre Dame. They have emerging offensive weapons and a developing quarterback. And on top of that, despite the slightly lower-than-expected score for Texas A&M against Auburn, they actually dominated in comparison to the Tigers, their sad struggling SEC opponent.
They more than doubled Auburn in yards and nearly in yards per play. They did get the return game back up and rolling. The defense did sack Jackson Arnold another five times. There’s plenty to like with Texas A&M’s win.
Coach Elko was likely joking a bit, especially when it came to throwing shade at Brian Kelly for complaining to the media, but his concerns are real. The Aggies are in the middle of potentially special storied season. Fans and media need to appreciate it for what it is.
