Against the Virginia Cavaliers, the Florida State Seminoles‘ run game was good despite the loss; it was obviously not the reason they lost the game. However, it can get better, and they will have that opportunity on Saturday against the Miami Hurricanes with RB Roydell Williams back.

According to the Seminoles’ two-deep depth chart, Williams is back and actually listed above Gavin Sawchuk with his name in bold letters as well.

Having him back could add a lot to their offense

The Seminoles need to get Roydell Williams back to make the offense even more lethal

Last Friday, the offense was not the issue. Anytime Virginia scored, outside of the first half, they pretty much matched it. The running game was good, the passing game was good, and Tommy Castellanos looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the country. However, the offensive line could be better, as could everything, really.

Sawchuk led the running game, like he has for most of the season, and true freshman Ousmane Kromah added some great runs, recording 12 carries for 63 yards, including a 23-yard run. The run game was solid, totaling 256 yards. But why not add another fresh set of legs to the equation?

Florida State Seminoles Rushing Stats vs. Virginia

  • 256 Rushing Yards, Tommy Castellanos with 78, Gavin Sawchuk with 74
  • 48 Rush Attempts, 5.3 Yards Per Carry
  • Three Rushing Touchdowns, Four Rushers over 30 yards

Williams will bring a bit of a third-down back feel to the offense since they will ask him to do more than just run the ball. They will throw it to him, and maybe ask him to play some pass protection, considering he could be one of the better players on the roster at that position.

And, most importantly, having Williams adds a new layer of mystery around the run game. The Seminoles run a lot of read option with the RBs and Castellanos, so having Williams, for whom there is no real tape yet with Castellanos on the field, could add a layer to it all.

There is still a ton of work to do on the defensive side of the ball for the Seminoles, but having something new on their offense certainly increases their chances at least a bit. As soon as they returned home the next day after their loss, the Seminoles got right to work. They will be ready.
