Former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer named as potential candidate for a major SEC job opening that just came about
The former Ohio State head coach recently said he doesn’t want to.
The college football landscape is shaping up to be a wild one over the next few months. Between the College Football Playoff, the transfer portal, and the upcoming head coaching hiring cycle, there’s plenty of movement expected. The Ohio State Buckeyes will have to navigate much of that, including the possibility of the hiring cycle poaching one of their coordinators.
With so many major job openings, names are being thrown around left and right. The latest candidate connected to an SEC vacancy is quite an interesting one.
Urban Meyer named as a candidate for Auburn Tigers after firing Hugh Freeze
Meyer recently spoke about not wanting to return to coaching, but the former Ohio State national champion is still being mentioned for the open Auburn job. Auburn becomes the fourth SEC school to shake things up recently, joining LSU, Florida, and Arkansas — all of which have head coaching vacancies following firings.
“If you can hire Meyer — if you can sell it, stomach it, grin and bear it — then you should. The drawbacks are obvious; so are the results. Meyer has shown no legitimate interest in getting back into coaching and left the profession several years before NIL and the House settlement transformed the sport. But it can’t hurt Auburn to make a phone call.” — Paul Myerberg, USA Today
Meyer won it all with the Buckeyes in 2014 and went 83-9 as head coach in Columbus. Before that, he captured two national titles at Florida and holds a career record of 187-32 over 17 seasons. Now 61 years old, Meyer seems unlikely to return to coaching and appears content with his role as a college football analyst at Fox. Still, whenever there’s a major SEC opening, his name always seems to come up.
The 2021 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars was likely the last time we’ll see Meyer on the sidelines, and it would take quite the opportunity to pull him back. Don’t expect that opportunity to be at Auburn, but you can bet they’ll at least think about making the call.
