Oklahoma Sooners HC Brent Venables gives fans a slight teaser regarding what some have been asking for years
Brent Venables and the Sooners have some new renderings for the stadium.
The Oklahoma Sooners have a gameday experience that is made for the SEC. That, along with the passionate fan base, is one of the bigger reasons they were a good addition to the most elite conference in college sports. However, it is clear that their gameday experience and home-field advantage are somewhat lacking compared to some of the conference’s top dogs.
For a long time, before the Sooners joined the SEC, fans have been asking for stadium renovations, a new stadium, or simply something to enhance that home-field advantage, and most importantly, add more capacity.
On Tuesday, the Board of Regents met to review some stadium-related matters. Before that, on Monday, head coach Brent Venables teased the fans a bit.
“It’s incredibly exciting,” Venables told reporters on Monday after returning from the bye week. “I think it shows a commitment to our fans, players, and program. The things it’s going to provide. Again, it’s 100 years old, the stadium… I think everyone is going to be excited when all of the details and renderings come out, whenever that is. But it’s also a source of pride for our university community as well. There’s been incredible support, financially speaking.”
Sooners have West Side project plan in place
According to George Stoia of SoonerScoop.com, the Sooners want to do a West Side Stadium project. The OU Board of Regents’ meeting on Tuesday would consist of an approval for the design of the West side stadium project. That project includes “47 suites; 64 loge boxes with seating for 280 persons; approximately 4,000 new club seats; and six club/lounge spaces for patrons.”
Along with this, the Sooners also plan to start Phase 2 of the Baseball Stadium project, as the renderings were released on Tuesday.
Oklahoma is doing all it can to have some of the best facilities and atmosphere in the SEC for all of its sports. It has a history and prestige when it comes to football. It has that aura about it, but it is clear that Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is a bit outdated for the SEC.
As Venables said, it’s very old. And the Sooners have the ninth-smallest SEC stadium in terms of capacity, among 16 teams in the conference. So, they could always get better.
Stoia also reported that the renderings of the stadium weren’t shown on Tuesday during that meeting, but he anticipated them being shown at one of the next two.
