The Ohio State Buckeyes have done extremely well to stay as focused on the road in front of them as humanly possible. The off-field distractions could sink even a team as loaded as this version of the Buckeyes, as there’s 2026 NFL Draft hype, a coaching carousel constantly dragging Brian Hartline to the middle of the conversation, and countless stars who could rock the boat if they got selfish.

Instead, this Buckeyes team continues to preach a message of solidarity and having one goal. As the middle of November arrives, the focus on The Game at the end of the month gets sharper. Michigan will be here before Hartline and anyone else on Ryan Day’s staff can really give their attention elsewhere.

Hartline gave the Ohio State locker room a spirited talk this week ahead of its matchup against UCLA. While the Buckeyes are expected to dominate this game, it’s time for the team to sharpen up some weak points. Here’s what Hartline said.

Brian Hartline gives Ohio State motivated pep talk entering next matchup

Hartline could take the easy road when it comes to addressing his loaded room of young stars. Guys like Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate don’t need motivation to beat up on a mediocre UCLA defense. They’ll get their stats and impress before sitting in the second half while the backups clean up the remaining snaps.

But instead of Hartline addressing rumors of LSU and Penn State being interested in him, he’s looking for an edge. The former NFL wide receiver and star offensive coordinator is ramping his unit up for games on the horizon.

“Being different. That’s the chase. Being different in November. It’s a choice, and I believe that. It’s a choice. It all starts with your mentality,” Hartline said.

In “The Trailer Vol. 10 Mentality”, Hartline reveals the heart and thinking process of a champion. Speaking to a room filled with 2024 national title winners can make motivation difficult, but focusing on the details of every day helps everyone avoid getting stale and complacent. Hartline’s greatness comes from having the ability to hyper-fixate on details.

There’s been questioning as to whether Hartline is ready for a Power 4 job, but he has quite a unique resume. Hartline was a very good player at Ohio State and became a starting receiver for the Miami Dolphins very early in his NFL career. His recruiting impact at Ohio State has been obvious as the school has become the obvious WRU.

That said, his first season as the team’s playcaller has been tough to judge. He’s producing top Heisman Trophy candidate Julian Sayin, plus Smith, Tate, and Bo Jackson. However, college football is often more about having the best playmakers than it is about scheme, and we don’t know about the staff Hartline could build.

Buckeyes fans hope they don’t have to find out those answers any time soon. He’s beloved in Columbus for good reason, and Day looks locked in long-term. Another title on Hartline’s hand could quickly change the equation, though. We’ll find out soon as the College Football Playoff nears.
