A lot has happened since the Ohio State Buckeyes handed the Michigan Wolverines a 27-9 loss back on Nov. 29.

That loss to Ohio State ended up being the final game for HC Sherrone Moore at Michigan, after the school decided to fire him for cause on Monday, in a major story. Since then, one former Ohio State coach’s move to become a coach at Michigan no longer looks so great.

Kerry Coombs’ leap to Michigan may not work out now

A week after Ohio State beat Michigan, the Wolverines hired former Buckeyes DC Kerry Coombs as their next special teams coordinator. Coombs was the Ohio State defensive coordinator during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Before that, he was in Columbus from 2012-2017 on Urban Meyer’s staff as a cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator.

With the firing of Moore, Coombs’ stint with the Wolverines could end up being a short one. Michigan has Biff Poggi as its interim head coach, but a new head coach is likely to be hired by the time the transfer portal opens in January. A new head coach will build out his own staff, and there’s no guarantee that he keeps Coombs in the spot as the special teams coordinator.

Kerry Coombs has been at Cincinnati since being let go at Ohio State

Coombs was let go after the 2021 season with the Buckeyes, and the writing was on the wall with Matt Barnes already calling the plays for the defense. In January of 2022, Coombs joined Luke Fickell’s staff at Cincinnati to coach cornerbacks and be the special teams coordinator.

After Fickell left for Wisconsin following the 2022 season, Coombs was moved to interim head coach. When Cincinnati made the move for Scott Satterfield to be their head coach, Coombs remained on the staff until recently leaving for Michigan.
