The Georgia Bulldogs are pretty good at retaining players through the transfer portal. They don’t retain all of them, but they’re never near the top of the SEC in terms of teams that have lost the most guys to the portal.

Losing guys to the NFL Draft? Now, that’s a different story. However, recently, the Bulldogs lost one of their key players to a rival, the Ole Miss Rebels. Safety Joenel Aguero, who contributed strong coverage and physicality in the secondary, is a perfect fit for them.

Bulldogs will miss what Aguero brings to the table, but the Rebels will be perfect for him

Aguero played a ton of nickel and safety for head coach Kirby Smart, which is often referred to as the STAR spot. Coming out of high school as a highly regarded four-star recruit from the 2023 class, the 5-11, 205-pound defensive back from Lynn, Massachusetts, showed solid instincts, athletic ability, and contributions in run defense and pass coverage out of high school.

Smart, one of the best talent and production evaluators in the game, saw something in him pretty early. In the 2025 season, he recorded a career-best 39 tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups, before what many believe was a late-season injury reduced his playing time and led him to enter the transfer portal.

In his career, he has played 36 games, has 72 tackles, one interception, and four pass deflections. He has experience, and he knows how to win; that’s perfect for what Ole Miss needs.

This move comes shortly after Georgia’s playoff loss to Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl, so there is a bit of a reason for Georgia fans to be upset here. However, he’s spent three seasons with the Bulldogs and has helped win many football games.

With one year of eligibility left, Aguero is expected to push for a starting role in Oxford’s secondary next season. He’s already been looked at by many who cover the Rebels as a player they could have desperately used this season. The fit is honestly perfect for him. However, the Bulldogs have to replace him.
