The Ohio State Buckeyes have been a top program in the country nearly every season. From Jim Tressel, to Urban Meyer, to Ryan Day, the Buckeyes have stayed amongst the top programs in college football.

Day taking over for Meyer was technically a risk due to Day never being a head coach before. Ohio State’s decision to promote Day when Meyer stepped down was the right one, as he’s 82-12 in six seasons at Ohio State.

Joel Klatt ranks Ryan Day highly on his list of top college football head coaches

College football analyst Joel Klatt recently named his top-10 head coaches with Indiana’s Curt Cignetti being in the No. 1 spot. Day comes in as Klatt’s No. 2 head coach in college football, trailing only Cignetti.

“Ohio State is an absolute pressure cooker. Day has the Buckeyes at the top every single year,” Klatt stated. “There’s not a coach that I deal with more in college football than Ryan Day. This guy is excellent.”

My conversations with Ryan Day about football, about running the program, about his philosophy, how he goes about recruiting, how he goes about talent evaluation, how he goes about game planning, hiring assistants, evaluating losses … all of those things. I learn so much when I talk with Ryan Day. He’s excellent, absolutely excellent.”

Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, Marcus Freeman, Steve Sarkisian, Kyle Whittingham, Kilani Sitake, Mario Cristobal, and Lane Kiffin were the rest of the top-10 from Klatt.

Ohio State is hitting its marks in all phases and checked another box this past season despite being knocked out of the College Football Playoff by Miami in the quarterfinal. The Buckeyes were able to defeat Michigan for the first time in four tries back in November. There’s no shying away from the win being a monkey off the back of Day and the program.

The Buckeyes capturing their first national championship in a decade during the 2024 season was another milestone for the program. Day had been close previously, but was able to get over the hump two seasons ago with a strong run to end the season with wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame.

Ohio State’s ability to replace coordinators alone has been a big strength of Day recently, and it is important for the program. The latest is Arthur Smith coming from the NFL to be the offensive coordinator, taking over for Brian Hartline after he took a head coaching job at South Florida.

There’s no arguing Day is amongst the top coaches in college football. Some folks, like Josh Pate, believe he’s the top coach in college football. Klatt has him at No. 2 at the time.
