The Florida Gators needed to work hard on retaining multiple top players this offseason, but the biggest one was running back Jadan Baugh.

Head coach Jon Sumrall knew he needed to be a priority for the 2026 Gators, and he spared no expense to retain him. Sumrall led a contingent to visit Baugh in his parents’ home on Christmas Eve, and it paid off in a big way.

With offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s history in maximizing his talent, Baugh could be in for a big season.

Jon Sumrall praises Jadan Baugh after spring practice

Baugh is one of the best returning players in the nation for the 2026 season, and he will maximize the offense. Sumrall praised him quite a bit after practice on Tuesday, and he had an interesting nugget we haven’t heard before.

“Jayden has really a lot of flexibility within the running back position, because he’s a big dude who can pound it downhill. He’s also better on the perimeter than people realize, probably just because you see his size and you think, ‘Oh, he’s just a hammerhead runner.’ He’s got more perimeter in him than you may initially think, catches the ball.

“He’s a hard tackle, man. He made a play today out in space that he bounced and spun out of a tackle. And I’m like, a guy that big to do that’s really impressive. You see smaller backs do those type of movements all the time. He’s been fun to watch.”

We’ve seen a lot of great things from Baugh over his two seasons with the Gators, including a surprising amount of burst to the outside. He’s arguably at his best running through the B-gap, but he can bounce it ouside when needed.

They are going to do everything they can to maximize what Baugh brings to the table, including potentially trying some wildcat this season.

Baugh is already one of the nation’s best running backs, and count Sumrall as a believer.
