Florida Gators are losing ground with five-star recruit, but one key element could keep them in the hunt
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been a big shooter when it comes to top recruits, and he’s going to have time to get it done.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been recruiting extremely well in his first offseason. Through July 13th, Sumrall has landed 26 commitments (17 blue chip), and the No. 8 class in the country. That’s a significant improvement over Billy Napier, who struggled with continuity when it comes to recruiting.
One thing that Sumrall has changed a lot when it comes to five-star recruits. It’s night and day with how things went under Napier, who did land a couple of five-stars in his own right, with the best being quarterback DJ Lagway.
Florida Gators losing ground with five-star Easton Royal
We’ve known that Texas Longhorns commit Easton Royal has been a big target of the Gators, and they have hosted him multiple times. Unfortunately, the Gators have unfortunately taken a step backward, as Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman highlights that the Longhorns and LSU Tigers.
“Factors being considered include location, offensive fit, relationships with staff, opportunities outside of football, and a considerable NIL deal.
“Texas has played with a lead for the past eight months. Some in Royal’s camp still lean toward the Longhorns.
“LSU has given Royal plenty to consider over four visits to campus in the spring and his official visit at the top of the summer. There is optimism in Baton Rouge about their chances of flipping the five-star.
“Royal’s mother tells Rivals that her son will continue to weigh his options into the season.”
It’s an interesting idea with Roal, who is already committed, will continue to weigh his options into the season. The more time Sumrall has to prove his concept as head coach with the Gators, the better chances they will have to land Royal.
Is it a guarantee? Far from it, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.
