Notre Dame football recruiting is poised for another major addition to the 2027 class this week.
Four-star Chicago (Ill.) Brother Rice defensive tackle Brayden Parks announced over the weekend that he will make his college decision on Thursday, July 23 at 5 PM Eastern Time. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish have been battling for the 6-3, 305-pound nose tackle for a long time, and all signs point toward Notre Dame being the pick.
Parks has been one of the most anticipated recruiting targets in the 2027 class for the Irish program. According to the 247 Sports Composite ranking, he is rated as the No. 199 overall player, the No. 24 defensive lineman, and the No. 10 player from the state of Illinois. His ties to Notre Dame run deep. Parks’ godfather is Notre Dame legend Chris Zorich, his cousin is former Fighting Irish running back Tony Jones Jr., and he has trained with former Notre Dame defender Kerry Neal.
An internal struggle in the Parks recruitment
Despite all those connections, Parks has wanted to do this recruitment his own way. From everything I have gathered, there has been an internal struggle for Parks between choosing a program he believes could be the best fit and forging his own path rather than simply following his family ties to South Bend.
That dynamic opened the door for the Oregon Ducks to become the other serious contender. Coach Dan Lanning and Oregon’s staff have done a phenomenal job pursuing Parks, and there were moments when it felt like they could pull him away. The Ducks have pulled out every stop to make their case, and there is a reason why this recruitment has gone down to the wire.
Why Notre Dame is the favorite
I love where Notre Dame stands heading into Thursday.
From a prioritization perspective, Parks has been a player that Freeman and the Irish staff have pushed for over a long period, even before Charlie Partridge was the defensive line coach. This has been a recruit the program desperately wanted.
Notre Dame already holds an impressive collection of 2027 defensive line commitments, including five-star Abraham Sesay, top-100 defensive end Aidan O’Neil, pass rusher Jackson Vaughn, elite defensive tackle David Folorunsho, and high-upside defensive lineman Segun Alexander. The missing link has been a true nose tackle type, and Parks fits that description perfectly. His combination of size, explosiveness, and physicality at 305 pounds is exactly what this class needs.
Over 40 schools have offered Parks, which speaks to his talent level. Still, based upon people that I have spoken to and conversations that I know have been had, a decision has been made. Notre Dame is the favorite, and I believe they will be the pick when Parks announces on Thursday.
What to expect on Thursday
As we have seen countless times on the recruiting trail, nothing is final until the decision is made and announced. The Fighting Irish will have to continue pushing over the last couple of days down the stretch. Oregon remains a real threat, and Lanning’s program deserves credit for making this a legitimate battle.
That said, there is certainly confidence on the Notre Dame side heading into Thursday. Parks is the kind of prospect Freeman’s staff has built this defensive line class around, and landing him would put the finishing touch on one of the more complete front-seven hauls in recent Notre Dame recruiting history.
