Jon Sumrall reveals interesting connection with the Florida Gators when talking about getting the job
It feels obvious at this point that the Florida Gators made the right choice when hiring Jon Sumrall to be the head coach.
SEC Media Days have come and gone with one coach coming out looking better than ever: Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall.
He was the most popular coach when it came to his press conference, and nailed it on every level, unless you think the comments about the cell phone going off were a big deal.
The more interviews we get with Sumrall, we get more details about his past and his hiring process.
Jon Sumrall highlights his interview process
Simply put: Sumrall didn’t think he was going to get the job with the Gators. He talked about it on Sirius XM at SEC Media Days.
“I do a Zoom. Scott Stricklin, Danny, and Old Duker are on the Zoom call, and get home later that night, and walk in the house. My wife, all the kids are in bed. My wife’s barely awake, and she goes, ‘Hey, didn’t you have a call that day with Florida?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ And she goes, ‘How’d it go?’ I said, ‘It went great. Like I killed it. Like I dominated,’ and she goes, ‘That’s awesome! Like that-that would be such a cool job.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, they’re not going to hire me. Florida does not hire me,’ and because to me, I’m so blessed to sit in one of the jobs that my whole life, not to make this guy next to me feel old, but 1993, I sat in the South End Zone on Legion Field and watched the SEC Championship game. It’s the Florida freaking Gators, you know. And so for me, this is one of those jobs that when they when the process kept going, I’m like, oh, this could be real.”
Sumrall getting the job shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, even if it is to him. His success at Tulane and Troy was well documented and made him very deserving of the opportunity.
It’s also interesting that Sumrall mentioned being at the 1993 SEC Championship Game, which co-host Chris Doering played in. Florida won the game 28-13.
Sumrall is right about one thing: it is the Florida freaking Gators.
