‘McCord was materially better’—Packers analyst offers insight on how new Miami Dolphins quarterback Kyle McCord performed in Green Bay

The musical chairs we’ve watched unfold in the Miami Dolphins quarterback room are some of the most chaotic scenes we are seeing unfold in a league filled with chaotic scenes. Cuts across the league are well underway and each team is due to 53 players in just under six hours.
Miami’s cuts are a little more complicated thanks to them adding a quarterback this afternoon. The Dolphins have agreed to trade a 2028 sixth-round draft choice for second-year quarterback Kyle McCord. To help paint the best picture of McCord as possible, I tapped into A to Z Sports Green Bay’s Wendell Ferreira.

“Kyle McCord was materially better than Tyrod Taylor in the preseason. The second-year quarterback, a former sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025, played 79 preseason drop backs. He had a 102.4 passer rating, a 5.4% big-time throw rate, and a 1.2% turnover-worthy play rate. In comparison, Taylor had a 77.1 passer rating, with no big-time throws or turnover-worthy plays.
The idea for the Packers is to keep a veteran, experienced quarterback behind Jordan Love. General manager Brian Gutekunst wasn’t willing to keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. So instead of exposing McCord to waivers, Gutekunst went to his old friend Jon-Eric Sullivan to get some compensation.
Sullivan was already out of Green Bay when the Packers signed McCord back in January, but it was a matter of weeks. So it’s fair to say that the new Dolphins general manager also had the young quarterback on his radar. It’s also a reunion with Kevin Patullo, who was McCord’s offensive coordinator as a rookie in Philadelphia.”

Materially better than Tyrod Taylor in the preseason isn’t necessarily the highest of bars. But it is a worthwhile snippet amid just how horrible Miami’s backup quarterback play was throughout the last three weeks. It’s been pulling teeth at times to secure first downs, let alone points. This makes McCord a welcomed addition, even if the situation he’s entering into in Miami this season has more questions than what was in place with the Packers.
Too often, an established name gets the benefit of the doubt because they’re an established name. Taylor’s run as a starting quarterback in the NFL is over (barring injury) but he’s a highly respected back-up quarterback.
McCord comfortably outperforming him is a good omen for what Miami wants to assemble in their own quarterback room as this season inches closer. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t see McCord play this season at all. But his outlook as a young quarterback with minimum salary who is playing some high level football an interesting bet. And for Green Bay, it certainly seems as though he’ll be missed. That should be enough to know this is a compelling swing of the bat.
