The Florida Gators are set to kick off their season against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday night, marking the beginning of the Jon Sumrall era in Gainesville.
After spending his first four years as a head coach, with two at Troy and the last two at the University of Tulane, it became evident that Sumrall was made to be a top-tier head coach in college football. After missing out on Lane Kiffin, the Gators hired Sumrall, and after a great offseason, he now gets the chance to take the field.
Going into the season, these are the biggest bold predictions for the Florida Gators.
Jadan Baugh is a Heisman finalist
When you talk about the Heisman Trophy, a few things come to mind. One, you need the ability to put together a fantastic season. Two, the Heisman Trophy often requires preseason accolades and hype to get there.
Jadan Baugh is one of the top running backs in all of college football. He ended last season with a massive performance against Florida State with 266 yards and two touchdowns. He’s primed to thrive in an offense led by new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
All of those things combined lead the Gators to make Baugh a major part of their offense, arguably building it around him. Reports have surfaced about Florida installing a wildcat package for Baugh, which further signifies how much they’re going to prioritize him this season.
When it comes down to the Heisman finalists in December, don’t be surprised if Baugh is leading the charge.
Dallas Wilson leads Gators wide receivers in receiving
The Gators’ wide receiver room is loaded with talent. There are multiple five-star players and some intriguing transfers led by Eric Singleton from the Auburn Tigers. Singleton spent time with Buster Faulkner at Georgia Tech, which will help integrate him into this offense rather quickly.
Even so, the best talent in the room isn’t Singleton, nor Vernell Brown III. It’s Dallas Wilson. He is 100% ready to go after dealing with a foot injury last year. Even in his short stint with the Gators in four games, he thrived. That Texas game is one that will live in Gators fans’ minds for a long time, as Wilson logged 126 yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 catches, showing that he is the guy to lead the Gators into the next chapter.
He’s a traditional X receiver, and Faulkner will find ways to get him the football down the field. Wilson profiles to be a red zone dynamo as well, using his physicality to maintain separation from cornerbacks.
K.J. Ford has 6+ sacks
It’s ballsy to predict a true freshman to have this kind of impact, especially with how much talent the Gators have at the JACK position, led by Jayden Woods. But K.J. Ford out of Duncanville, Texas, has done a fantastic job throughout fall camp and has shown that he is worthy of getting snaps early and often.
The amount of rotation the Gators have historically done on the defensive line has a real potential to continue. If that ends up being the case, Ford is going to get plenty of opportunities, especially in third-down situations. Florida is going to allow whoever is the best player to play, and Ford’s body type is already ready for the college game. Don’t be surprised if he has a strong freshman season.
Florida Gators make the college football playoff
This is the boldest of all these predictions. After finishing 4-8 last season, you could have argued the Gators could have or should have won multiple games they ended up losing, especially against the likes of Ole Miss and Georgia, not to mention the atrocity against South Florida. If you flip those games around, all of a sudden the Gators are bowl-eligible, and you feel a lot stronger about what they could be this year.
The reality is simple. The Billy Napier-era Gators underachieved massively, not because they weren’t talented, but because they weren’t coached well. This coaching staff is significantly different, and in this case, different is better. The strength program has massively improved, and Sumrall has these guys believing they can be great. Now all they have to do is go prove it.
A 9-3 record is far from out of the question, and 10 wins is certainly on the table for this Florida Gators team.
