North Carolina Tar Heels star defensive end Melkart Abou Jaoude is expected to return this week when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish visit Chapel Hill, according to a source.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound pass rusher has not played since the 2026 season opener against the TCU Horned Frogs, missing the last couple of games with a hand/wrist injury. His return would be a massive boost for a North Carolina defense that has already been one of the more impressive units in the country through three games.

Head coach Bill Belichick’s defense has been stout and incredibly efficient getting after the passer, even without its best pass rusher. Despite the drama around former defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, this group has played extremely well during the 2026 season.

Adding Abou Jaoude back to the mix ahead of this Oct. 3 matchup against Notre Dame could present some real problems for Fighting Irish quarterback CJ Carr, head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, and the Notre Dame passing offense.

Abou Jaoude’s recruiting background and career production

Abou Jaoude originally began his career at the University of Delaware, where he was an All-CAA performer during his breakout 2024 season. He led the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks while also recording eight quarterback hurries.

He transferred to North Carolina ahead of the 2025 season, Belichick’s first in Chapel Hill, and put together a tremendous year. Abou Jaoude led the Tar Heels with 12 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks while also recording 47 total tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

The powerful base end is one of the more productive pass rushers in the ACC and the entire country. While the estimated return date has been this matchup against the Fighting Irish all along, it appears that the likelihood of seeing No. 9 on Saturday is increasingly high.

North Carolina’s defense has been good without Abou Jaoude

One thing is very clear about this North Carolina defense: it has not needed Abou Jaoude to be productive early in the season. Through three games, the Tar Heels have allowed opponents to score just 13.7 points per contest, ranking 20th at the FBS level.

As a run defense, North Carolina has allowed 123 yards per game with just 3.4 yards per carry. The pass defense has been the big strength of this team. While the Tar Heels are allowing a 67% completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks, they are giving up less than 10 yards per completion and just 189.3 yards through the air.

The most productive defensive lineman so far this season has been defensive tackle Xavier Lewis. Despite being just 6-0 and 260 pounds, Lewis leads the team through three games with 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. The Tar Heels have also gotten a strong performance from Jaylen Harvey, a talented young pass rusher who has recorded three tackles for loss and two sacks.

With Abou Jaoude likely back, North Carolina has the opportunity to potentially give the Notre Dame passing offense some fits. He is also a standout player in the run game as well, which adds another layer to the challenge for the Fighting Irish offensive line.
