There hasn’t been much chatter about the Notre Dame 2027 recruiting class for a couple of months, and for good reason. Since the end of the summer, it appeared that head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish were most likely done building the class.

However, as I’ve talked about a ton here at A to Z Sports, there was always a desire to keep a close eye on a couple of different positions. One of them was potentially bringing in one more defensive back.

For a while, Notre Dame was considered a contender for Texas defensive back Greedy James. He ended up decommitting from the Longhorns and flipping to LSU this past offseason.

Throughout the early portion of the evaluation period for the 2026 season, secondary coach Aaron Henry, defensive coordinator Chris Ash, and the rest of the Fighting Irish defensive staff have kept their eye on some intriguing secondary options. One of them is 2027 Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic cornerback Daveon Belhomme, who picked up an offer from Notre Dame this past weekend.

Daveon Belhomme’s recruiting background

From a pure recruiting background, Belhomme is a player worth watching closely. He will not blow many people away in terms of his raw rankings or his overall offer list right now.

The 5-11.5, 175-pound athlete is rated as a three-star by all the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, he sits as the No. 1,186 overall player, the No. 110 cornerback, and the No. 121 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class.

Some of his offers include the Fighting Irish, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Cincinnati, and Iowa State, among several others.

As a junior in 2025, Belhomme was a standout two-way player for Clearwater Central Catholic. On defense, he totaled 51 tackles, three pass breakups, and an interception. He also caught 10 passes for 154 yards and 10 touchdowns on the offensive side of the football.

He’s off to a strong start as a senior, too. In six games played so far this season, Belhomme has 27 total tackles, a tackle for loss, three interceptions, and four pass breakups.

On offense, he has hauled in 13 receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. He has also completed his lone pass attempt of the season for a 40-yard touchdown. On top of that, Belhomme is the team’s top kick returner, averaging 31.9 yards per return, including a 90-yard touchdown.

Why Notre Dame is intrigued

When you pop on the film, it’s easy to see why Henry and the Notre Dame staff like the Florida native. He’s a smooth overall athlete with a ton of upside on the defensive side of the football. That’s especially true once he homes in on the technical side of his craft.

The production backs it up. A player who can pick off passes, return kicks for touchdowns, and contribute on offense brings the kind of versatility that coaches love to develop.

What comes next

Belhomme is not committed to a school right now. If Notre Dame pushes, the Fighting Irish should have a good opportunity to make some things happen.

However, it appears there is a storm of recruiting interest on the horizon. If Freeman and Co. really want the talented two-way star, they will likely need to push quickly.

If not, a lot more competition appears to be on the way. We will see how quickly the Irish staff decides to make its move.
