Miami Hurricanes get terrible news that no one in the college football world asked for as they prepare for Notre Dame
The Miami Hurricanes are now in a difficult situation. They face No. 11 Notre Dame this week and won’t have Malachi Toney.
The Miami Hurricanes just got some bad news, and it’s news that no one wants to hear. In fact, I’m willing to bet opposing fans and other teams don’t want to hear it.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Miami Hurricanes will be without superstar sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney. Toney has a high ankle sprain and will have surgery, which should allow him to return for the College Football Playoff.
The typical recovery timeline is at least four weeks. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes’ schedule is about to get a bit tougher than it’s been. So the timing isn’t exactly ideal. They play No. 11 Notre Dame this week. They play 6-2 Duke after, then 6-2 Virginia Tech before closing out with Boston College.
Toney is the most exciting player in college football right now. He’s good for the sport, and no one is glad this injury happened. He’s elite, a potential Heisman winner, and the best player on the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
Hurricanes need other players to step up massively
Toney has already thrown for over 1,000 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. He has 700 more receiving yards than the team’s second-leading receiver. So, this team is going to need the other guys to step up big time.
This is a legit shot for guys like Cooper Barkate to show what they can do. He’s got 372 receiving yards and four TDs this year. Or Daylyn Upshaw, who has 263 receiving yards and two TDs. Whoever it is, someone in that WR room is going to get a huge workload upgrade.
Toney accounts for 37% of the Hurricanes’ total passing offense. That’s just him. They force-feed him the ball because they have to. Toney does whatever he wants on the field. Playing without him will be tough.
