Former Florida Gators rookie is thriving at a new position, and his future is incredibly bright
The Florida Gators have done a good job putting offensive linemen into the NFL, and Austin Barber is the next.
The Cleveland Browns selected Florida Gators left tackle Austin Barber in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and the rookie offensive lineman has already made a significant impact on his new team. With multiple questions at both tackle spots long-term heading into the draft, how Barber would fit into the Browns’ offensive line was a legitimate question. Many, myself included, believed he would serve as a swing tackle right away and potentially earn a starting job along the way.
Training camp told a different story. Barber did something none of us expected: he won the right guard job.
On Wednesday, Browns head coach Todd Monken was asked about Barber and whether he would remain the starter once offensive guard Tevin Jenkins is healthy. Monken said he sees it that way. It’s interesting verbiage from Monken, but it makes sense when you look at the success Barber had in his first NFL start.
Austin Barber is thriving at right guard
Barber played all 51 snaps and was the highest-graded player on the Cleveland Browns’ offense with an 82.6 overall grade. He posted a 78.2 run blocking grade and an 83.2 pass blocking grade while allowing just one pressure for a pass blocking efficiency of 98.4%. Those are impressive marks for any offensive lineman, let alone a first-year player who did not play guard in college at the University of Florida.
The fact that Cleveland was able to get Barber to a place where he could thrive at guard this quickly is remarkable.
On top of Barber’s dominant debut, he’s already proven that he’s ahead of a veteran like Jenkins, who was brought in on a one-year, $4 million contract. That’s a significant development for the Browns’ offensive line outlook. Jenkins was expected to be a starter, but Barber’s emergence gives Cleveland a cost-effective, long-term solution at right guard.
This is a great sign for Barber’s future with the Browns. While his best position may still be tackle given his size and athleticism, it’s encouraging to see him thriving right away in the NFL. If he continues to produce at this level, the Browns will have found a legitimate starter in the third round who can anchor their interior offensive line for years to come.
