Former Ole Miss Rebels tight end Dae’Quan Wright could be landing with the LSU Tigers despite playing in a preseason game with the Cleveland Browns.
One of the biggest stories in football right now revolves around former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who could be heading to LSU for the 2026 season after spending all summer with the Cleveland Browns.
Yeah, there’s where we’re at with college football right now.
Some recent court rulings are allowing players in the high school class of 2022 to return to college for a fifth season, even if they spent time in the NFL.
And those players are apparently going to be allowed to transfer within the SEC despite the conference’s rule about no post-winter intraconference transfers.
It’s all a mess, and it’s all the NCAA’s fault, either for not passing the five-for-five rule earlier in the offseason (it wasn’t passed until June) or for not waiting until after the 2026 regular season.
Wright is expected to be waived by the Browns and if he clears waivers, he reportedly has a deal in place to join LSU’s football program.
A lot of football fans aren’t happy about this development. They understandably don’t like the idea of a player who’s played in preseason NFL games returning to college.
An Ole Miss legend could prevent all of this if he really wanted
An Ole Miss legend is actually in position to stop Wright from transferring to LSU.
Kind of.
Former Ole Miss tight end Wesley Walls, a College Football Hall of Famer, is on the College Football Playoff committee for the 2026-27 season.
If Walls wanted LSU to change its mind on adding Wright to the roster, all he’d have to do is leak to the media that the playoff committee will penalize teams who play players that the NCAA believes should be ineligible (the NCAA is vehemently against the court decision that allows the class of 2022 players another season). He could say that any team who plays a player the NCAA doesn’t think should be eligible won’t be included in the playoff.
This wouldn’t be an unprecedented move by Walls, either.
A member of the NCAA Tournament selection committee, which is made up mostly of sitting athletic directors, has already suggested that the committee could threaten teams who play players deemed ineligible by the NCAA.
If the committee wanted to take a stand and say that they won’t include teams in the playoff that play players the NCAA says are ineligible, would any team then be willing to take the risk of adding a former NFL player to their roster?
I don’t think they would.
It’s not just Walls that could make this stand. Anyone on the committee could make the statement.
I know the NCAA is a mess right now, and it seems like anything goes, but playing a player who has already been on an NFL roster feels like a bridge the sport shouldn’t cross, regardless of which programs it benefits.
