There was some bad news for 2027 Notre Dame offensive line commit Jackson Hill this week.

The West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade standout offensive tackle will miss his entire senior season after undergoing knee surgery, per reports over the weekend. Hill committed to Notre Dame this offseason after previously being committed to UCLA, backing off that pledge roughly a month in to join head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish.

For Freeman and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, Hill was a bit of a surprise commitment for some at the time. He isn’t a player who carries a great recruiting ranking or an impressive offer list, but he seemed to fit the mold of an evaluation that Rudolph trusts.

That approach has done wonders for the Notre Dame offensive line staff in the past, including players like Anthonie Knapp and Matty Augustine, as well as getting on Will Black early when he was considered a three-star by many of the major recruiting platforms.

Hill is currently rated on the 247 Sports Composite ranking as the No. 465 overall player, the No. 43 offensive tackle, and the No. 36 player from the state of California for the 2027 recruiting class, sitting as a three-star player. On top of offers from UCLA and Notre Dame, Hill also carries an offer list that includes Stanford, Oregon State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Nevada, UNLV, Cal Poly, Cornell, and Dartmouth.

While that offer list and those recruiting rankings will not impress you, Hill has been doing some impressive things on the camp circuit this offseason, including some really borderline elite testing numbers. Many had hoped his senior season would start to showcase the athleticism and upside that Rudolph has been attracted to.

Unfortunately for Hill and for Notre Dame fans, they will not see that potential ascension this fall.

What this means long term for Hill and the Irish

Long term, this isn’t a huge deal for the prospects of Hill becoming a surprise when he lands in South Bend, but it is a bummer for those who wanted to see that recruiting ranking rise and the type of boost he could have earned as a senior.

Hill is part of what is an elite 2027 offensive line class for Notre Dame that includes five-stars Olu Olubobola and Albert Simien. The Irish also have commitments from top-100 offensive tackle James Halter and interior offensive line legacy Richie Flanagan. If Hill develops into the player this Notre Dame staff seems to think he can be, he will end up being one of the big surprises of an elite 2027 Notre Dame offensive line class.

At worst, his combination of size, power, and athletic upside paints a pretty easy floor as a program player at the next level. The questions will be about whether Hill ends up landing as an offensive tackle, which he plays in high school, or if he moves to the interior long term. That is a deeper conversation for the future.

For now, this is a hiccup on the road for Hill’s Notre Dame career. Everyone will hope he has a clean recovery after the knee surgery that unfortunately cost him his senior season.
