Notre Dame football and head coach Marcus Freeman have not given up on 5-star 2027 Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit linebacker Kaden Henderson, despite his June 18 commitment to Texas A&M.

The Fighting Irish staff, now featuring new linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary, has continued to pursue the Florida standout for months, setting the stage for one of the most compelling recruiting battles of the 2027 cycle.

Henderson’s commitment to head coach Mike Elko and the Aggies was a tough blow for Notre Dame at the time. Many believed Freeman and the Irish were in prime position to land the consensus top-100 prospect. But as the details emerged after Henderson’s decision became official, Elko and Texas A&M made a final pitch that included some negative recruitment toward Notre Dame and a godfather offer that proved too much for Henderson to pass up, at least at that time.

As I initially reported after Henderson committed to Texas A&M, I didn’t expect Notre Dame to back off. This was a player the staff was extremely high on and could potentially push for all the way up until National Signing Day.

That expectation has held true. It’s been reported by many at this point that the Fighting Irish have continued their pursuit over the last several months.

A monumental recruiting test for Freeman and the Irish

This recruitment is going to end up being one of the huge recruiting tests for Freeman and the Notre Dame staff.

If they don’t end up flipping Henderson, the 2027 class will still be tremendous. Most people believe it’s a top-3 overall group nationally. However, if Notre Dame is able to make some magic happen and eventually get Henderson to be a part of the class, it would be another monumental recruiting instance from the Freeman staff.

Beyond the rankings boost, a Henderson flip would be more proof that Freeman and Company are not afraid to battle for any recruit, no matter where they live, no matter their status, or no matter what offers are currently out there. It would be another example of how the recruiting game has changed around South Bend.

I’m not ready to predict that a flip will happen, but I’ve also learned over the last year or so to not count out Freeman and his recruiting operation.

There’s a long season ahead of this Notre Dame team. With national title aspirations, they have plenty of time to continue making their pitch to Henderson and convince him that South Bend is the place to be.

How the two programs compare right now

It will also be worth watching how Elko and the Aggies perform this season.

Texas A&M is currently working through some offensive line struggles, and quarterback Marcel Reed remains extremely up and down. When you compare the two programs, you can make an easy statement that things look better both short-term and potentially long-term for Notre Dame. However, Elko and his staff are recruiting at an extremely high level themselves, and their 2027 class is already an elite group.

Freeman versus Elko is going to produce quite the ending for the Henderson recruitment. If Freeman is able to win out somehow, it would be another huge statement victory for this Fighting Irish program.

Kaden Henderson’s recruiting background

Henderson is currently rated as a consensus top-100 player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, he sits as a five-star player, the No. 24 overall player, the No. 1 linebacker, and the No. 4 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class.

A long list of impressive programs have pursued Henderson beyond Notre Dame and Texas A&M.

Some of the other top programs that have offered him include Georgia, Texas, Alabama, LSU, Miami, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Missouri, Nebraska, UNC, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Syracuse, USC, UCF, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and SMU, among several others.

The 6-1.5, 218-pound linebacker was dynamic as a junior in 2025, recording 49 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 20 quarterback hurries, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery despite missing five games. So far in 2026 as a senior, Henderson has managed to record 19 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four sacks, and four more quarterback hurries in just three contests.

This is an elite prospect that Notre Dame has had their eye on for a long time. Let’s see if they can get this one done.
