Notre Dame football could have the upper hand for a fast-rising defensive lineman based on a recent recruiting trend
Notre Dame football just extended a very interesting 2028 scholarship offer. A recent recruiting trend could be very helpful.
Notre Dame football recruiting continues to expand its 2028 board, and the Fighting Irish just extended a scholarship offer that carries some built-in intrigue. Head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive line coach Charlie Partridge offered 2028 Oradell, New Jersey, Bergen Catholic defensive tackle Jayden Beckley, a 6-foot-and-a-half, 285-pound interior lineman who has been turning heads this offseason with a rapidly growing offer list.
On the 247Sports composite ranking, Beckley sits as a 3-star prospect, the No. 404 overall player, the No. 38 defensive lineman, and the No. 15 player from the state of New Jersey for the 2028 recruiting class. His rankings vary between a three- and four-star depending on the platform, but regardless of where you look, elite programs are taking notice. His current offer list includes Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Penn State, Boston College, NC State, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia, among several others.
Why Bergen Catholic matters for Notre Dame
If Bergen Catholic sounds familiar, there’s a good reason. The New Jersey powerhouse is the same high school as 2027 Notre Dame defensive end commit Jackson Vaughn and new 2028 quarterback commit Trey Tagliaferri. The Fighting Irish are doing a better job of tapping into the pipeline of New Jersey talent, and that could conceivably continue even more in the 2028 class.
Beckley was outstanding last season for Bergen Catholic as a sophomore, particularly against the run. At 285 pounds, he already carries the frame to compete on the interior at the college level, and there is still plenty of physical development ahead. Notre Dame’s presence at Bergen Catholic gives Partridge and the staff a natural connection that could pay dividends in this recruitment.
Where Beckley fits on the 2028 board
As things currently stand, it’s uncertain just how high Beckley will land on Notre Dame’s priority board for the 2028 class. The offer does bring a ton of intrigue given the Irish staff’s footprint at Bergen Catholic and across the state. There’s a lot of runway left in this recruitment, and the relationships already in place could give Notre Dame an inside track if they decide to push hard.
Partridge setting a new standard on the defensive line
There’s a reason to believe Partridge will be aggressive in the 2028 cycle. During the 2027 class, the defensive line coach has reset the standard at Notre Dame. He currently holds commitments from 5-star edge Abraham Sesay, 5-star defensive tackle David Folorunsho, top-100 pass rusher Aidan O’Neil, Vaughn, and high-upside defensive tackle Segun Alexander. With Brayden Parks still being pushed for, this 2027 defensive line haul has a chance to be one of the best this program has produced.
A prospect like Beckley could be an early target to watch for the 2028 class as Partridge tries to outdo the standard he set in 2027. Notre Dame’s growing pipeline at Bergen Catholic and throughout New Jersey gives the staff a foundation to build on, and this offer is a sign that the Irish aren’t slowing down on the defensive line recruiting front.
