Jeremiah Smith’s Heisman favorite status is more fragile than it looks with 3 SEC quarterbacks rising up the rankings

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith sits atop the Heisman race entering Week 6. A loaded SEC quarterback class and the way voters treat the award make that spot a lot shakier than it looks.

Jeremiah Smith is the Heisman favorite going into Week 6 of the college football season. Is he actually going to make it to the finish line?

Early October is when the Heisman Trophy race starts to really speed up, and by November it hits its boiling point. So it’s the right time to look at the favorites. I was shocked to see how heavy of a favorite the Ohio State wide receiver has become.

Now, to be clear, I’m not saying Smith can’t win the Heisman. He absolutely can. This is a guy who I said is the greatest wide receiver in college football history, and he plays like he believes it. But a wide receiver who isn’t playing defense and isn’t making a high-level impact on special teams has a fine line to walk to win this award compared to previous Heisman-winning wide receivers.

A ton of road is still in front of us. If you’re betting on someone to win the Heisman, I think you might have a lot more value looking at the quarterback position.

Trinidad Chambliss has a chance to remind everyone who he is

For whatever reason, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss needs to remind the college football public once again who he really is, which is the best quarterback in the sport.

And you may say, Tegan, did you not watch the Florida game? I did. It was a letdown spot. But need I remind you what happened the week prior? Chambliss put Ole Miss on his back to beat LSU, and that was one of the best moments of the entire season.

He’s going to have every opportunity to take this award by the horns (no pun intended). The Rebels face off against Texas, and then there’s the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State, where Chambliss goes head-to-head with another high-level quarterback in Kamario Taylor (who belongs in this conversation). Those are the stages Heisman moments are made on and Chambliss will have his chance to remind everyone who he is.

Alabama vs. Georgia could shake up the Heisman rankings

Then you have Alabama and Georgia. Take a look this weekend at Keelon Russell and Gunnar Stockton, because whichever one has the better performance and wins that football game is easily going to be in the conversation for the Heisman.

Stockton is playing some of the best football of his entire career right now, while Russell is rising into one of the biggest superstars we’ve seen at the quarterback position in a long time. This is a huge game between these two and it could reshape this entire race.

And those are just a couple of examples at the quarterback position alone. Any one of those four could easily make noise this weekend take over as the favorite.

The Heisman is a quarterback award and it’ll take even more for Smith to win it

Let’s call a spade a spade. The Heisman is a quarterback award, and we all understand that. That’s the whole problem for Smith.

For Smith, all it takes is one mediocre game by his standards and he’s going to drop in the rankings. He could miss a half. He could have one down Saturday. That’s the margin. It won’t take much for someone to knock him out of the favorite spot, and the quarterbacks chasing him have marquee games stacked through October and November.

But, Smith’s talent is undeniable. If he keeps at this pace and ends up winning the Heisman, it wouldn’t shock me one bit.

But I’m telling you right now, I absolutely believe it’s still going to be a quarterback holding that trophy by the end of the season.
