Ohio State HC Ryan Day got very honest about a Buckeyes’ coach that seems to be on the hot seat after loss to USC

There are expectations to meet at Ohio State, and Ryan Day has made that very clear coming out of the loss to USC.

Heading into the 2026 college football season, the offensive line was expected to be one of the Ohio State Buckeyes‘ biggest strengths. Ohio State returned four of five starters up front. Eight games in, the Ohio State football offensive line hasn’t come close to meeting those expectations, and that puts pressure on second-year offensive line coach Tyler Bowen to right the ship before a potential change comes.

Ohio State hired Bowen away from Virginia Tech, where he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Before arriving in Columbus, he hadn’t worked as an offensive line coach since 2017 with Maryland. Bringing in Bowen was always a risk. So far, the Buckeyes haven’t seen the results on the field, though he has been a solid recruiter.

Ohio State’s offensive line hasn’t delivered

Health has hurt the Buckeyes this year, with injuries to players like Austin Siereveld and Phillip Daniels. Still, this was supposed to be a deep offensive line, and the depth hasn’t shown up on Saturdays consistently.

USC had two sacks against Ohio State in Week 9’s loss. The week before, Indiana sacked Ohio State’s quarterbacks four times. Teams are consistently getting pressure, and the running game has been up and down all year. Through eight games, the Buckeyes’ offensive line simply hasn’t lived up to what everyone expected from it.

Left tackle Ian Moore has struggled mightily recently. Ohio State expected him to step in right away and lock down the starting left tackle job this season. Instead, he’s been one of the players who hasn’t been what the program envisioned.

Ryan Day addresses Tyler Bowen’s status

Ohio State coach Ryan Day was asked about the job Bowen has done and where things stand with his status. Day didn’t shy away from the standard that comes with coaching in Columbus.

“You got to evaluate everybody, and you know that’s the thing about being at Ohio State,” Day said. “You know the expectations are very high. I think that there’s definitely some positive things that have gone on there. But when you come out of the last game or two, I think that you know there’s just been too many mistakes there, and so we have to improve on that. And I think he would tell you that you know he’s working as hard as he can to get those things fixed and try to figure out ways to put these guys in better situations and coach them better, and that’s the bottom line.

“So we know what needs to get done, and you know we’ve had too many penalties, too many missed assignments, and I think everybody in that group room would tell you that there’s no like guys screwing around any of that, and I think he would tell you the same thing. So he’s going to get back to work, and we all know what the expectation is.”

Day pointed to some positives, but the message was clear. Penalties and missed assignments have piled up, and the standard at Ohio State isn’t going to change for anyone.

A tough stretch ahead for the Buckeyes

The biggest thing for Ohio State could simply be getting healthy. A couple of players have battled injuries on and off throughout the season, and the unit hasn’t had the consistency it needs as a result.

Health alone won’t fix everything, though. Ohio State’s offensive line has to be better down the stretch, and the schedule isn’t getting any easier. Oregon is going to present a tough test, and the Buckeyes still have to play Michigan before a potential postseason run if they can get there.

Protecting the quarterback and establishing the run game will be crucial in both of those matchups. If the same issues pop up consistently the next four games, the noise around Bowen will get louder. It isn’t unfair to say Bowen’s job is on the line over the next month. How his group responds in November will be telling.
