How in the world is Texas A&M still ranked in the AP Top 25 poll after what we’ve seen over the last three weeks from Mike Elko’s squad?

The latest AP poll dropped after Week 3, and everyone and their mom has already talked about how bad it is. It’s a weekly occurrence, it’s a layup, I completely get it. But as somebody who has watched every single snap of Texas A&M football this season, every single one, how is this team still ranked?

And if you want to say SEC bias, that’s fine, I guess. But I’m more coming from the fact that there’s a long list of SEC teams that should be in front of them.

The preseason problem started all of this for the AP Top 25 rankings

The inherent problem with the AP poll is one I’ve talked about before, and it’s not going away: voters hold on for dear life to preseason notions, preseason rankings, and they cannot let go. Texas A&M was a preseason Top-10 team, and they were wrong. I said they were going to be wrong. There was too much to replace with this team.

And the results have proven it. They beat Missouri State 50-0 even though the first half was really ugly. Then Arizona State comes to town and outplays them for the majority of the game, and if it wasn’t for two pick-sixes, the Sun Devils more than likely have a competitive fourth quarter. Then the Aggies get dog-walked by Kentucky at home.

In what world does that represent a Top-25 team?

Why this actually matters for Texas A&M

Now, for the people who say, “Why are you getting upset about this?” you have to think about the minds of the people on the college football playoff committee and the fact that they get handed sheets of paper with previous rankings and statistics.

These AP polls skew a lot of the rankings and perceptions of teams because they are that bad. That is why I and many others get so upset about these polls. They do end up mattering, because we have real humans who aren’t going to actually watch the games. They’re going to look at a piece of paper, go off the rankings, and make key decisions about these programs.

So yes, I am going to be upset about this. It is mind-boggling that Mississippi State is not in front of Texas A&M. What has A&M done? Nothing that warrants a ranking, and until the results on the field say otherwise, the AP poll is doing everyone a disservice by pretending this is still a Top-25 team.
